WORSHIP SEPTEMBER 23 2018
11 A.M. WORSHIP
THE GATHERING
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Prelude on CASSELL Austin Lovelace
*THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers;
People: But their delight is in the law of the LORD, and on God’s law they meditate day and night.
Leader: They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither.
People: In all that they do, they prosper.
Leader: The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore, the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
People: For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
- Psalm 1
*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 434 Today We All Are Called to Be Disciples KINGSFOLD
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Abundant God, so much of our harmful behavior is rooted in our envy. You have given us our manna - our daily bread - but we want more. We have allowed ourselves to be seduced by commercialism, telling ourselves that we are not complete until we have the nicest things. Forgive us when our actions convey that you are not enough for us. Help us to live our lives simply and faithfully, trusting in your steadfast love to provide all that we need. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Friends, our salvation is not something that can be purchased with money or fame.
People: Our salvation comes from Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone.
Leader: I announce to you this day, our sins are forgiven.
People: Alleluia! Amen.
*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 343)
So God grant us for tomorrow ways to order human life that surround each person’s sorrow with a calm that conquers strife. Make us partners in our living, our compassion to increase, messengers of faith, thus giving hope and confidence and peace.
*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE
Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!
People: And also with you.

THE ANTHEM King of Glory, King of Peace Eric Thiman
King of glory, King of peace, I will love thee; and, that love may never cease, I will move thee. Thou hast granted my request, thou hast heard me: thou didst note my working breast, thou hast spared me. Wherefore with my utmost art I will sing thee, and the cream of all my heart I will bring thee. Though my sins against me cried, thou didst clear me, and alone, when they replied, thou didst hear me. Seven whole days, not one in seven, I will praise thee; in my heart, though not in heaven, I can raise thee. Small it is, in this poor sort to enroll thee; e’en eternity’s too short to extol thee. Amen. (Text: George Herbert)
THE NEW TESTAMENT LESSON James 3:13-4:8 (page 216 in the pew Bible, NT)

*THE HYMN 527 Near to the Heart of God McAFEE
*THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
