THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

Making Peace

A voice from the dark called out,
       ‘The poets must give us
imagination of peace, to oust the intense, familiar
imagination of disaster. Peace, not only
the absence of war.’
                  But peace, like a poem,
is not there ahead of itself,
can’t be imagined before it is made,
can’t be known except
in the words of its making,
grammar of justice,
syntax of mutual aid.
                    A feeling towards it,
dimly sensing a rhythm, is all we have
until we begin to utter its metaphors,
learning them as we speak.
A line of peace might appear
if we restructured the sentence our lives are making,
revoked its reaffirmation of profit and power,
questioned our needs, allowed
long pauses . . .
A cadence of peace might balance its weight
on that different fulcrum; peace, a presence,
an energy field more intense than war,
might pulse then,
stanza by stanza into the world,
each act of living
one of its words, each word
a vibration of light—facets
of the forming crystal.

NEW ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL SERIES
Beginning this Sunday, Rev. Emma Neishloss will be teaching a series on Nadia Bolz-Weber's book Accidental Saints: Finding God In All the Wrong People. Bolz-Weber writes about 'stubbornly resisting God' and discovering that God often shows up in the most unlikely of people. All are welcome to join us in our discussion of the book in the Session Room at 9:45 a.m. Bring your own copy of the book (available for purchase here). We will be covering chapters 1 & 2 on May 6th.

CONGREGATIONAL LUNCHEON & ANNUAL YOUTH DESSERT AUCTION
This Sunday, May 6th, is the Spring Congregational Luncheon, catered by Zoe's Kitchen. RSVP to office@morningsidepc.org for the luncheon. During the luncheon, we will auction off homemade desserts with all proceeds going to this summer’s Youth Trip to Montreat. If you enjoy baking, there is still a chance to sign up to show off your skills. Bring your “A Game” to see if your dessert can earn the most money! To donate your baked goods, sign up at SignUp Genius.

INTOWN COLLABORATIVE MINISTRIES OUTREACH
Starting this Sunday, May 6th through May 20th, our 1st - 5th grade Sunday School students will be assembling Grab-n-Go bags for the ICM outreach teams to pass out as they engage with homeless people on the streets. Items needed are easy-open fruit and pudding cups, snack bars, bottled water, instant coffee, other non-perishable food items that are small in size, as well as utensil and napkin sets. Place your donations in the blue Mission bin in the stairwell next to the church office. Contact Nancy Collins at ncollins0209@gmail.com or Laura Ulep at lauraulep@gmail.com for more information.
