THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Welcoming is not just something that happens as people cross the threshold. It is an attitude; it is the constant openness of the heart; it is saying to people every morning and at every moment, “come in”; it is giving them space; it is listening to them attentively. To welcome means listening a great deal to people and then discerning the truth with them.

RHO READERS MEET THIS SUNDAY, AUGUST 12
The month the RHO Readers will be reading and discussing Varina, by Charles Frazier, author of Cold Mountain. Sooner or later, history asks, which side were you on? In his powerful new novel, Charles Frazier returns to the time and place of Cold Mountain, vividly bringing to life the chaos and devastation of the Civil War. When 17 year old Varina Howell agrees to marry Jefferson Davis, 35, she assumes that she will be a plantation owner's wife. But Davis becomes the president of the Confederacy. So, in the spring of 1865, Varina Davis and her five children are on the run to Havana with Union soldiers in pursuit. Varina is a story of a woman who comes to realize that "complicity carries consequences."

MORNINGSIDE: FAR AND WIDE
It's easy to forget that the things we do in our Sanctuary, in our small corner of the world have an impact beyond our immediate community. Read the letter below and be encouraged that MPC makes a difference!

Dear Rev. Neishloss,
I wanted to send you a note of thanks for the publishing of your services and bulletins online. My name is Mike Duffey and I work in activities at Kendal Crosslands retirement community in Pennsylvania. We are primarily a Quaker community with a large number of residents who are affiliated with other religious groups, including Presbyterian. Each Sunday, residents come to our activities center to watch and participate in a Presbyterian service. As a retirement community and as a skilled care facility, we had some pretty specific needs for our residents:
- The service could only be, up to an hour long, which is about as long as our residents could comfortably enjoy
- The service needed to use the hymnals we own
- The service needed to post a bulletin that we could print out for our residents
- The service needed to be downloadable so that the service would not be at risk of stopping because of poor internet flow
In addition, the residents appreciate wonderful music and your service provides the same.
And finally, let me share a thought with you. Most of us go day to day, week to week unaware of all the folks we touch in positive ways. I wanted to let you know that many folks, far out of your view, are benefiting from the good work being done at your church. Thank You!
Take care,
Mike
James Michael Duffey (Mike) Kendal Activities Assistant
