MPC plans one or two annual opportunities to serve outside our Atlanta home base.  We've forged ties with several organizations to assure that our service is efficient, beneficial to both the recipients and to our teams, and cost- and time-effective.  Currently, we're surveying our congregation to discern interest in an overseas mission trip for the coming year. We've worked with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) and RHINO (Rebuilding Hope in New Orleans) to help the Gulf Coast  recover from hurricanes Katrina and Rita in Pearlington, Mississippi during Lent in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and in New Orleans in 2012 and 2013, doing general construction with residents who lost their homes. In August 2010, volunteers joined the rebuilding efforts of PDA in Nashville, Tennessee. In March 2012, we journeyed to Gadsden, Alabama to do tornado recovery work. This two-day model worked very well for our community and we will look into more mini-mission trips in the near future. In March 2010, our Lenten trip included both work and education aspects as we learned about urban ministries through The Pilgrimage program in Washington DC. This experience led to the creation of an annual project in Decatur to help senior citizens live independently in their homes by doing minor repairs and yard maintenance.

In October of both 2010 and 2011 Morningside members traveled on the Haiti Pilgrimage to work with Hearts with Haiti. On both trips, our team carried "second suitcases" filled with donated items for educational and personal use — more than 1,000 pounds worth so far!
