All:           O holy, eternal Trinity, we praise you for ever and ever.

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 260       A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

  Holy and merciful God, in your presence we confess our sinfulness, our shortcomings, and our offenses against you. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love.

   Have mercy on us, O God of great compassion, for we are ashamed and sorry for all we have done to displease you. Forgive our sins, and help us to live in your light, and walk in your ways, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE                                                               (Hymn 579)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

Leader:  This child has now been received into the one holy catholic and apostolic church through baptism.  God has made him a member of the household of God.  See what love the Father has for us, that we should be called children of God, and
so we are.  Let us welcome the newly baptized.

People:  With joy and thanksgiving we welcome this child into Christ’s church.  We are the family of God for we are all one in Christ.

THE CHORAL RESPONSE           Child of Blessing, Child of Promise                          Copes

THE SOLO                                  Hear  Ye, Israel (from Elijah)                  Mendelssohn

             Sheryl Wingert, soprano

   Hear ye, Israel! Hear what the Lord speaketh: “Oh, hadst thou needed my commandments!” Who hath believed our report? To whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him oppressed by Tyrants; thus saith the Lord: “I am He that comforteth. Be not afraid, for I am thy God; I will strengthen thee. Say, who art thou, that thou art afraid of a man that shall die; and forgettest the Lord, thy Maker, who hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the earth’s foundations?”

THE SCRIPTURE LESSON              Luke 18: 9-14          (page 76 in the Pew Bible)

THE SERMON             “What’s Wrong with Righteousness?”             Joanna Adams

But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven,

but was beating his breast and saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner.!’ Luke 18: 13

* THE HYMN 298                            There’s a  Wideness in God’s Mercy

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED

    I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

    And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

    I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the  communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

    Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
