THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Righteous God, you have crowned Jesus Christ as Lord of all. We
confess that we have not bowed before him, and are slow to
acknowledge his rule. We give allegiance to the powers of this
world, and fail to be governed by justice and love.
In mercy, forgive us. Raise us to acclaim him as ruler of all, that we may
be loyal ambassadors, obeying the commands of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.

prayers of confession)

in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON John 18:33-37 (page 106 in the Pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM Christ’s Flock Martin Shaw
In Christ’s own flock, let love be surely placed. From Christ’s own flock, let
concord hate expel. Of Christ’s own flock, let love be so embraced, as we in
Christ and Christ in us may dwell. Christ is the author of all unity from whence
proceedeth all felicity. O sing unto this glittering, glorious King. Let heart
and voice like bells of silver ring. Alleluia!
THE SECOND LESSON Colossians 1: 11-20 (page 188 in the Pew Bible)
THE SERMON “The Powers That Be” Joanna Adams
He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Colossians 1:17
* THE HYMN 306 Fairest Lord Jesus
* THE NICENE CREED (Ecumenical)
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven
and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally
begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God
from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he
came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the
Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third
day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended
into heaven and is seated on the right hand of the Father. He will
come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his
kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who
proceeds from the Father [and the Son], who with the Father and the
Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the
prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We
acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the
resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy
kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us
this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our
debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
