THE INTROIT Immanuel ist da! (from Cantata 19) Telemann

Immanuel is here! Triumph, hallelujah! Rejoice, you heavenly thrones and all who dwell on
earth, we are, through him, again near heaven; Immanuel is here! That which awakens fear in
our souls has been laid in the dust by Jesus, in whom our fathers placed their hope. Triumph,
hallelujah!

THE LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH Morningside Staff **
* Unison Prayer:
God of love, empower our lives to be filled with kindness and
generosity of spirit, that in caring for others we might bear
witness to your love for us. As we prepare for our celebration of
Jesus’ birth, fill our hearts with love for the world, that we may
know your love and the one whom you have sent, your son, our
Savior. Amen.
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 11 O Lord, How Shall I Meet You?
A MOMENT WITH THE CHILDREN Cathy Schreiber
**Representing the staff are Joanna Adams, Gabe Couret, Sandra Crawford, Bekah Diehl,

THE CALL TO CONFESSION Chris Henry
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Who are we, Lord God, that you should come to us? Yet you have visited
your people and redeemed us in your Son. As we prepare to celebrate his
birth, forgive us our sins, and deliver us from proud thoughts and vain
desires. Make our hearts leap for joy at the sound of your word, and move us
by your Spirit to bless your wonderful works. We humbly ask this through
him whose coming is certain, whose day draws near, your Son, our Lord Jesus
Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God,
forever and ever. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 23)
Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children are always welcome in the sanctuary during worship. Should you find that your child grows restless, there is

THE RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS
THE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 40: 3-5 (page 627 in the Pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM If Angels Sung a Saviour’s Birth Joseph Stephenson
(This carol was published in the American colonies in the late 18th century,
appearing in the typical tune books of the time.)
If angels sung a Saviour’s birth on that auspicious morn, we well may imitate their mirth.
Now He again is born. If kings and shepherds gave Him praise, this Christ the tiny King, we
too must now our voices raise and joyous songs now sing.
THE SECOND LESSON Matthew 11:2-11 (page 10 in the Pew Bible)
THE SERMON “The Christmas Question” Joanna Adams
“Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?” Matthew 11:3b
* THE HYMN 27 Gentle Mary Laid Her Child
* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by
the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the
third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and
sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence
he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the
communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the
body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy
kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us
this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our
debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
