Bulletin For February 10, 2008
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP Chris Henry
Leader: This is the season of Lent, a season to remember the sufferings of
Jesus Christ.
People: A season to remember that to follow Christ is to take up
our crosses and to be servants of all.
Leader: A season to remember Jesus' question, "Are you able to drink the
cup that I drink?"
People: A season to ask ourselves how we, like Simon the Cyrene,
might help to bear the cross.
Leader: A season to give sacrificially to others.
All: A season to watch and wait with Christ, that we may have
courage in the hour of testing. Let us worship God.
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 356 Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing
A WORD WITH CHILDREN Cathy Schreiber
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of mercy, you sent Jesus Christ to seek and save the lost. We confess
that we have strayed from you and turned aside from your way. We are
misled by pride, for we see ourselves pure when we are stained, and great
when we are small. We have failed in love, neglected justice, and ignored
your truth.
Have mercy, O God, and forgive our sin. Return us to paths of
righteousness through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 280)
The Lord has promised good to me, His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children are always welcome in the Sanctuary during worship. Should you find that your child grows restless,
there is child care available. Infants are cared for in the Nursery in Room 105, toddlers 18 months through two
years in Room112. Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Passing of the Peace for special
classes. Preschoolers are in Room 204 and K-5th grade are in Room 201.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE MINUTE MESSAGE Gail Kitchens
THE FIRST LESSON Matthew 4:1-11 (page 3 in the Pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM Lord Jesus Christ, Be Present Now Byrd
Lord Jesus Christ, be present now. Our hearts in true devotion bow, Thy spirit send with grace
divine. O may Thy truth within us shine. Unseal our lips to sing Thy praise, our souls to Thee in
worship raise. Make strong our faith, increase our light. O may we know Thy name aright. THE SECOND LESSON Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7 (page 2 in the Pew Bible)
THE SERMON People Want to Know - A Sermon Series for Lent
III. "Why Not Eat the Apple?" Joanna Adams
"...but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat,
for in the day that you eat of it you shall die." Genesis 2:17
* THE HYMN 396 O for a Closer Walk with God
* THE CREED Brief Statement of Faith-Presbyterian Church (USA)
We trust in Jesus Christ,
fully human, fully God.
Jesus proclaimed the reign of God:
preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives,
teaching by word and deed and blessing the children,
healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted,
eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners,
and calling all to repent and believe the gospel.
Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition,
Jesus was crucified,
suffering the depths of human pain
and giving his life for the sins of the world.
God raised this Jesus from the dead,
vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil,
delivering us from death to life eternal.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy
kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us
this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our
debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.
Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Chorale Mathias
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
*THE HYMN 223 O My Soul, Bless Your Redeemer
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Abide with Me arr. Martin
