* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 473           For the Beauty of the Earth
(verses 1 through 5)

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious and Merciful God, you have created us in your image. Yet, too
quickly we deny your life-giving ways. You teach us to forgive as we have been
forgiven. Yet, we hold onto our anger and disappointments; we cling to our
hurts and frustrations. You embrace us with your love. Yet, we hoard this gift;
hesitant to embrace our neighbor and share the love you so freely give. By
your steadfast love and mercy, release us from our sinfulness. Return to us
the joy of your salvation. Hear, O Lord, our prayer for your forgiveness. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 572)
Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children are always welcome in the Sanctuary during worship. Should you find that your child grows restless,
there is child care available. Infants are cared for in the Nursery in Room 105, toddlers 18 months through two
years in Room 112. Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Passing of the Peace for special
classes. Preschoolers are in Room G-11 and K-5th grade are in Room G-1.)

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE FIRST LESSON Psalm 84 David York
(page 513 in the Pew Bible)

THE ANTHEM                       O Day of Peace (Jerusalem)                      Parry
O day of peace that dimly shines through all our hopes and prayers and dreams, guide us to justice, truth,
and love, delivered from our selfish schemes. May swords of hate fall from our hands, our hearts from envy
find release, till by God’s grace our warring world shall see Christ’s promised reign of peace. Then, shall the
wolf dwell with the lamb, nor shall the fierce devour the small. As beasts and cattle calmly graze, a little
child shall lead them all. Then enemies shall learn to love, all creatures find their true accord; the hope of
peace shall be fulfilled, for all the earth shall know the Lord.

THE SECOND LESSON           Matthew 5:43-48           (page 5 in the Pew Bible)

THE SERMON         People Want to Know - A Sermon Series for Lent
                       V. “Why Should I Love My Enemies?” Cathy Schreiber
Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:44

* THE HYMN 207               How Lovely, Lord

* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH A Brief Statement of Faith - Presbyterian Church (USA)
The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith,
sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor,
and binds us together with all believers
in one body of Christ, the church.
The same Spirit
who inspired the prophets and apostles
rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture,
engages us through the Word proclaimed,
claims us in the waters of baptism,
feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation,
and calls women and men to all ministries of the church.
In a broken and fearful world
the Spirit gives us courage
to pray without ceasing,
to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior,
to unmask idolatries in church and culture,
to hear the voices of peoples long silenced,
and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace.
In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit,
we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks
and to live holy and joyful lives,
even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth,
praying, Come, Lord Jesus! With believers in every time and place,
we rejoice that nothing in life or in death
can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
