* THE CALL TO WORSHIP Christopher Henry
Leader: It is an awesome thing to stand in the presence of God, to call on
God’s holy name.
People: As far as the heavens are above the earth, God’s ways are
above our ways.
Leader: But we come with confidence, because in Christ we are called to
be God’s people.
People: Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before
God our Maker.
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 306 Fairest Lord Jesus
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Wise and loving God, you have given us your light and truth to guide us
through confusion, yet we have relied instead on our human wisdom and have
lost our way. You offer to share our burdens and give us your strength, yet we
trust in our own efforts and find ourselves exhausted. Bring us back into your
presence, O God; overcome our separation from one another and from you. By
your Word and Spirit, fill us with the gifts that equip us to meet life’s demands,
that we may be your people in the world and live in the confidence and joy of
Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 572)
Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children are always welcome in the Sanctuary during worship. Should you find that your child grows restless,
there is child care available. Infants are cared for in the Nursery in Room 105, toddlers 18 months through two
years in Room 112. Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Passing of the Peace for special
classes. Preschoolers are in Room G-11 and K-5th grade are in Room G-1.)

Question to the Participants
Prayer (unison)
Faithful God, in baptism you claimed us; and by your Holy Spirit you are
working in our lives, empowering us to live a life worthy of our calling. We
thank you for leading these servants to this time and place. Establish in
them your truth, and guide them by your Holy Spirit, that in your service
they may grow in faith, hope and love, and be a faithful disciple of Jesus
Christ, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and
forever. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON II Corinthians 5:16-21 (page 170 in the Pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM By the Waters of Babylon Charles Howell
Gabriel Couret and Sheryl Wingert, soloists
By the waters of Babylon we sat down and wept, when we remembered thee, O Zion. As for our
harps, we hanged them upon the trees. They that led us captive required of us a song: Sing us one of
the songs of Zion. How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land? If I forget thee, O Jerusalem,
let my right hand forget her cunning. (from Psalm 137)
THE SECOND LESSON Matthew 27:45-54 (page 31in the Pew Bible)
THE SERMON People Want to Know - A Sermon Series for Lent
VII. “Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?” Joanna Adams
And about three o’clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabbachthani?” that is,
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Matthew 27:46
* THE HYMN 251 Your Faithfulness, O Lord, Is Sure
* THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by
the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the
third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and
sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence
he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the
communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the
body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY He Never Said A Mumblin’ Word Spiritual
LeSean Lewis, guest soloist
* THE RESPONSE AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 101)
Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small.
Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all. Amen.
* THE HYMN 383 My Faith Looks Up to Thee
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
