WORSHIP JUNE 22, 2008
12TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE PRELUDE Jeremy Rush, guest organist/choirmaster
(The organ Prelude is a time for reflection and preparation for worship.)

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP Sara Hayden
Leader: Thus says, the Lord, the one who created and formed you, O Jacob:
People: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by
name, you are mine.
Leader: When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the
rivers they shall not overwhelm you:
People: When you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the
flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the
Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 478 Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Wondrous God, you have broken the power of sin and death, and by your
great mercy, you have given us new birth into a living hope. This we
proclaim. This we want to believe. But seeds of doubt grow quickly in our
hearts. Fear chokes off confidence and prevents us from receiving your
Spirit. We multiply our sorrows by worshiping what we see and hear more
than you, our delight and salvation. O God, in your great mercy, grant us the
peace that passes understanding. Forgive us, and draw us close to you, that
we may breathe deeply of your presence and find in you the fullness of
joy. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 451)
O friends, in gladness let us sing, supernal anthems echoing, Alleluia,
Alleluia! To God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit, Three in One,
Alleluia! Alleluia!

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Passing of the Peace for special classes. Preschoolers are
in Room G-11 and K-5th grade are in Room G-1.)

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE FIRST LESSON Psalm 86:1-10, 16-17 David Bothwell
(page 514 in the Pew Bible)

THE ANTHEM God Is Our Refuge Allen Pote
God is our refuge and strength, a present help in time of trouble. Though the mountains shake
in the heart of the sea, though the waters roar and foam, we will not fear. Come and behold the
work of the Lord, the awesome acts of God. He is in the midst of his people, in all the earth. He
is the Word, we are his hands, he will lead us. He is the air, we are his song, we will celebrate
his presence all the day long.

THE SECOND LESSON Romans 6:1-11 (page 146 in the Pew Bible)

THE SERMON "A Matter of Death and Life" Christopher Henry
But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. Romans 6:8

* THE HYMN 400 When We Are Living

* THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose
again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right
hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the
quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Prelude on ‘Rhosymedre' Ralph Vaughan Williams

* THE HYMN 495 We Know That Christ Is Raised
