WORSHIP AUGUST 3, 2008
18TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP Robert Gray
Leader: For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together
in my mother's womb.
People: I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.
Leader: How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of
them!
People: I try to count them-they are more than the sand;
All: I come to the end-I am still with you.
- from Psalm 139

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 288 I Sing the Mighty Power of God

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
We have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have
followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have
offended against your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we
ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to
have done.
O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare those who confess their faults. Restore
those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to the world in
Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O merciful God, for his sake, that we may live
a holy, just, and humble life for the glory of your holy name. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 466)
My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all the
earth abroad the honors of Thy name.

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Baptism for special classes. Preschoolers are in Room G-11
and K-5th grade are in Room G-1.)

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Leader: This child has now been received into the one holy catholic and apostolic church
through baptism. God has made him a member of the household of God. See what love
the Father has for us, that we should be called children of God, and so we are. Let us
welcome the newly baptized.
People: With joy and thanksgiving we welcome this child into Christ's
church. We are the family of God for we are all one in Christ.

THE CHORAL RESPONSE Child of Blessing, Child of Promise Copes

THE ANTHEM Blessed Is the One Anderson
John Wingert and Tami Giusto, soloists
Blessed is the one who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of
sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the Lord, the law of the Lord, and on
his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of living water that yields
its fruit in due season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. - Psalm 1

THE SCRIPTURE READING Genesis 32:22-31 (page 29 in the Pew Bible)

THE SERMON "Wrestling" Joanna Adams
Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. Genesis 32:24

* THE HYMN 384 O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go

* THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose
again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right
hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the
quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY O Lord, Our Refuge Smith

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 275 God of Our Life

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
