WORSHIP AUGUST 17, 2008
20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP Christopher Henry
Leader: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with
gladness. Come into God's presence with singing!
All: For the Lord is a gracious God, whose mercy is everlasting;
and whose faithfulness endures to all generations.

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 489 Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word,
and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have
not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not
loved our neighbors as ourselves.
In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and
direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your
ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 139)
To Thee, great One in Three, the highest praises be, hence evermore! Thy
sovereign majesty may we in glory see, and to eternity love and adore.

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Dedication for special classes. Three-year-olds are in
Room 204; Pre-K in G-11; K - 2nd grade in G-1; 3rd - 5th grades in G-3.)

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS

THE DEDICATION
Leader: Do you, the members of Morningside Presbyterian Church, accept these
people as your teachers?
All: We do.
Leader: Will you encourage them, pray for them, support them, and honor them, as
they seek to lead us in deepening our knowledge of God?
All: We will.
Leader: Let us pray. God of grace, pour out your Holy Spirit on these your servants,
that they may be faithful teachers in the church. Give them ears to hear the
Holy Spirit's leading; anoint their lips to speak your truth with power. In
everything, give them the mind of Christ, who taught in deed as well as in
word. Give them joy in their work, and a sure sense of your abiding presence
for their work of ministry; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON II Corinthians 1:15-22 (page 168 in the Pew Bible)

THE ANTHEM As the Deer Longs for the Water Brooks Sullivan
As the deer longs for the water brooks, so longs my soul for you, O Lord. My soul thirsts for
God, for the living God. When shall I come to appear before Him? My soul thirsts for God.

THE SECOND LESSON Matthew 5:33-37 (page 5 in the Pew Bible)

THE SERMON "Saying Yes and Saying No" Joanna Adams
"Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes' or ‘No, No'; anything more than this comes from the evil one." Matthew 5:37

* THE HYMN 339 Be Thou My Vision

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
