Four-Week Sermon Series: "Insights for Living from the Old Testament"

A Sunday school teacher was teaching her Kindergarten class about the need to
be kind to animals. She spoke of David and how he would search for the missing
lamb, drive off wolves and marauderswith this slingshot and so on. "See how
good David was to those sheep? We ought always to be kind to
animals." Then, one freckle-faced free thinker spoke up, "But Miss Sharp,
he wasn't very kind to the bears and wolves!" (Betty Sharp Howard, A Bird's
Eye View of the Bible)

During worship for the next four weeks, Christopher Henry and I will be
preaching on some of the most well-known stories from the Old Testament. We will
not draw conclusions for you but instead will explore with you the moral
landscape of ancient Israel, the character of the people involved, and above all,
the nature of the God whose powerful, enigmatic presence we encounter on
every page of the Hebrew Scriptures.  The remaining sermons are:

September 14, 2008
Preaching – Christopher Henry
Sermon II: “The Joy of Human Love”
Text: Genesis 24- selected verses

September 21, 2008
Preaching – Joanna Adams
Sermon III: “The In-laws”
Text: Exodus 18 – selected verses

September 28, 2008
Preaching – Joanna Adams
Sermon - IV: “Does Character Matter?”
Text: II Samuel 11 & 12 – selected verses

Across all the centuries, the Old Testament still has the power to enliven us by
the sheer aliveness of its insights.

See you on Sunday,
Joanna

Joanna Adams' First Wednesday Women's Bible Study
Tomorrow, Wed. Sept 3, we resume our monthly Women's Bible Study.
This year we will take up Luke's Gospel. Come to the Parlor (Room 107)
at 9 a.m. for coffee. The study begins at 9:15 and ends by 10:30.
Childcare is provided.

Officer Nomination
Morningside is blessed with excellent leadership, and the time has come to
nominate the next class of Elders and Deacons.  Nomination forms will be
inserted into the bulletin this Sunday.  Before nominating someone, please make
sure the person is willing to serve a 3 year term.  If you have any questions
about the process, please feel free to contact a member of the Officer
Nominating Committee:  Carolyn Morton, Bill Means, Georgia Marshall, James Klotz
or Michael Perez.

Welcome Home Baskets
Please remember that Sunday is the last day to bring items for the Welcome Home
Baskets for Clifton Sanctuary Ministries. Needed items: coffee, dryer sheets,
boxed mac 'n cheese, toothpaste and brush.

Congratulations!
William Herbert Prevost was born on August 14. Proud parents are Melisa and
Matt, and siblings are Caroline and Alex.

Big Fun
All elementary age children are welcome to our first Big Fun Day of the school
year, Saturday, Sept. 20, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.  Ms. Cathy returns to lead our drama
and fun as we learn about baptism.  We will also do an outreach
project, enjoy pizza and play together.  RSVP to Melinda Sandkam
msandkam@morningsidepc.org today if your child can join in the fun!

Sunday Forum, Sept. 21
Beginning this month, we will launch a new program, Sunday Forums: Reflections
on the Issues of the Day. On selected Sundays, we will gather in the parlor
(room 107) for discussion on an up-to-the-minute topic, finishing by 1:00 p.m.
Our first Sunday Forum is scheduled for September 21st. Joanna Adams and Chris
Henry will lead the program on Patriotism for Christians. As the 2008 election
approaches, how is our Christian faith related to our responsibilities as
Americans? What influence does faith have on political involvement in a free
democracy?

Sympathy
Sympathy to the family of Nancy and Mac Frampton in the death of Nancy's sister,
Maudie Malcolm last week. Services will be held tomorrow in Tifton.

Did You Know...?
Last month, while Morningsider Cindy Humphries was in the hospital recuperating
from a foul ball injury at a Braves game, she was visited by the Braves' General
Manager bearing the gift of a jersey signed by the whole team. We are so

thankful Cindi is back in the pew and at her "greeter" post.
