24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP Kevin Weber
Leader: The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?
People: The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be
afraid?
Leader: I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
People: Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the Lord!
Leader: Let us worship God.
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 229 From All That Dwell Below the Skies
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of grace, you draw us into yourself even when we turn away from your
presence. Your love reaches out to embrace us wherever we are, whatever we
do. For such love we offer our deepest thanksgiving. Yet we confess that we
have not loved you as you have loved us. We have abandoned hope in your
promises. Our eyes have been upon ourselves rather than upon you. Forgive
us for giving up faith in you, for discounting your enduring promises to us.
Fill us anew with your Spirit, that we may press forward in joy and
confidence, doing your good work, trusting in your purposes, witnessing to
the good news of Jesus Christ--good news that will never be silenced. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 473)
For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth,
and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild - Lord of all to Thee we
raise this our hymn of grateful praise.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST

THE ANTHEM This Day Edwin Hawkins
Quartet - Tami Giusto, Linda Rozakis, Gabe Couret, Chris Hawkins
Give us this day our daily bread. You said You would supply all my needs according to Your
riches. I have but to ask and I shall receive. To go from here and share this love You gave to me, to
show someone who's lost and help them find their way, the way to truth and faith so they can be
free. Lord, we need Your love. We need Your peace. We need Your joy this day.
THE SECOND SCRIPTURE LESSON Genesis 24:34-38, 42-49, 58-67 (page 19 in the
Pew Bible)
THE SERMON Sermon Series: Insights for Living from the Old Testament
Sermon II: "The Joy of Human Love" Christopher Henry
"He took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her." Genesis 24:67
* THE HYMN 241 Behold the Goodness of Our Lord
* THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose
again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right
hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the
quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
