WORSHIP JANUARY 11, 2009
BAPTISM OF THE LORD

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God who formed the heavens and earth, and all that dwell in them-we
gratefully acknowledge that by your Word you created us, and that by your
Spirit, you continue to sustain us. Yet we have lived as though we were our
own, and as though your world belonged to us. We have failed to be good
stewards of your creation, and have acted as though we belonged to ourselves.
Forgive our resistance to your life-giving Spirit. Fill our hearts with gratitude
and humility. Empower us to embrace and display your holy claims on our
lives, to the honor of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, your Beloved Son.
Amen.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE FIRST LESSON Genesis 1:1-5, 24-27 (page 1 in the Pew Bible)

THE ANTHEM Spirit Seeking Light and Beauty Gaelic
Spirit seeking light and beauty, heart that longest for thy rest, soul that asketh understanding, only
thus can ye be blest. Through the vastness of creation, though your restless thought may roam, God is
all that you can long for, God is all His creatures' home. Taste and see Him, feel and hear Him, hope
and grasp His unseen hand; though the darkness seems to hide Him, faith and love can understand. God
who lovest all Thy creatures, all our hearts are known to Thee; lead us through the land of shadows to
Thy blest eternity.

THE SECOND LESSON Mark 1:9-11 (page 33 in the Pew Bible)
