WORSHIP FEBRUARY 8, 2009
4TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP John Morgan
Leader: We give you thanks, O Lord, for you are good; your steadfast love
endures forever.
People: We have cried to you in times of trouble; you delivered us
from our distress.
Leader: We thank you, O Lord, for your steadfast love; your wonderful
works abound about us.
People: You know of our needs before we utter your name; you
indeed are to be praised!
All: Let us worship God.
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 455 All Creatures of Our God and King
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Loving God, you know our weaknesses. Fearful of the future, we forget what
you have done for us in the past. We see scarcity where you supply
abundance. We complain when conditions challenge us. We begrudge others
their success, allow envy to divide us, and live lives unworthy of the
gospel. Generous God, forgive us. Help us to remember your wonderful works,
trust your gracious provisions, seek out your presence, and strive to serve you
well. Give us eyes to see your love at work in the world. By the power of your
Holy Spirit, renew our minds, cleanse our spirits, and empower us to serve you
faithfully and trust you fully. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 466)
My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all the
earth abroad the honors of Thy name.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three-year-olds are in
Room 204; Pre-K in G-11; K - 2nd grade in G-1; 3rd - 5th grades in G-3.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE FIRST READING Psalm 147:1-11 (page 549 in the Pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM How Shall I Sing that Majesty Beaudrot
How shall I sing that majesty which angels do admire? Let dust in dust and silence lie; sing, ye
heavenly choir. Thy brightness unto them appears whilst I thy footsteps trace. The sound of God
comes to my ears but they behold thy face. How great a being, Lord, is thine, which doth all
beings keep! Thy knowledge is the only line to sound so vast a deep. Thou art a sea without a
shore, a sun without a sphere. Thy time is now and evermore, thy place is everywhere.
THE SECOND READING Isaiah 40:21-31 (page 628 in the Pew Bible)
THE SERMON "Remembering Our Way Out of Babylon" Christopher Henry
"Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning?" Isaiah 40:21a
* THE HYMN 411 Arise, Your Light Is Come!
* THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose
again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right
hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the
quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY I Love to Tell the Story Fischer, arr. Warriner
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
* THE HYMN 415 Come, Labor On
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Jubilate Deo (Psalm 100) Wood
