Life@Morningside - February 15, 2009

By Morningside Staff

Morningside Presbyterian Church, Atlanta

SPECIAL GUESTS Today we extend an especially warm Morningside welcome to special guests who join us to help celebrate our building dedication. Many of these friends have given generously to A Time of Promise efforts and our congregation is grateful beyond words.

WELCOME VISITORS!
Thank you for worshipping with us at Morningside Presbyterian
Church. Please complete the information in the Friendship Pad at the
end of the pews and pass the pads down and back again during The
Concerns portion of worship. Special worship notebooks and books for
children are located on the kiosk outside the sanctuary doors. Nursery
for infants is in Room 105; toddlers 18 months through 2 years are in
Room 112. Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Baptism for
special classes. Three-year-olds are in Room 204; Pre-K in G-11; K -
2nd grade in G-1; 3rd - 5th grades in G-3.

THANK YOU
Many thanks to everyone who participated in our church wide Garden
Workday, along with Trees Atlanta, to spruce up our new entry. The
plantings were given in loving memory of William G. Welch, friend and
frequent visitor of Morningside, who died July 17, 2008.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOU!
As you tour the building today following the building dedication, be
sure to look over the mission bulletin board next to the Session Room
(# 103) and the children's programming announcements across from the
Nursery, Room 105. There is exciting new information about
opportunities to participate under the new team structure. Read about
varied children's programming for this spring, summer and next fall. See
how Mission has expanded to include Global Concerns and
Peacekeeping. These two committees have joined together to present to
you Mission Around the World. For the next six to eight weeks we will
be focusing on Presbyterian mission projects in Africa.

FLOWERS IN THE SANCTUARY
Flowers this morning are given to the glory of God by Christine Butz
and Shannon Pengelly, who were married in Morningside's Sanctuary
yesterday.

LENTEN DEVOTIONAL
Lenten Devotionals will be available to be picked up next Sunday,
February 22, in preparation of the beginning of Lent. A very big "Thank
You!" to everyone who was willing to design, contribute, or proofread
this year's Lenten Devotional.

PAJAMAS!
Pajamas fly out the door at the Threads store, a clothing ministry of All
Saint's Episcopal Church. MPC will help to ease the deficit by
collecting new pajamas, underwear and socks on Sunday, February 22.
Look for collection baskets in the Narthex for your new PJ's, underwear,
and socks to warm up infants through 5th grade sizes. Boys' clothes are
in shorter supply than girls' clothes, so if in doubt, choose boys'
clothes. Contact Gail Kitchens at 770.436.7617 or Grace Howard
404.849.4758 with any questions.

SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER
Sign up today to flip pancakes or help the clean up crew for our second
annual Shrove Tuesday event, which will also be a pajama party this
year! Contact Leslie Prince with any questions. Children are invited to
wear their favorite pajamas and bring a new pair for our collection with
Threads. They will also have a chance to decorate coin banks to take
home and fill during Lent. The coins collected will support the clown
program at Children's Healthcare. All are welcome on February 24,
5:30-6:45 p.m. as we join with the preschool community for this great
outreach.

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE
Please plan to join us for our Ash Wednesday Service February 25 at 7
p.m. in the Sanctuary. Childcare will be provided in Room 105.

YOUNG ADULT CONVERSATIONS
The Young Adults will be gathering on Friday, February 27 at 7 p.m. in
the home of Amy DeBaets and Brian Mills (741 Carlyle Lake, Decatur,
30033) to enjoy good food, good fellowship and good conversation.
Our conversation will center on Lenten practices and what it means to
live in a season of Lent. Please come with a small appetizer to share and
a willingness to join the conversation! If you have any questions, please
contact Amy DeBaets (amy.debaets@gmail.com) or Kevin Weber
(kevin.m.weber@gmail.com).

NEW MEMBER SUNDAY - MARCH 1
If you have been thinking about joining Morningside on our next New
Member Sunday, March 1, plan on coming to the Inquirers' Class at
9:45 a.m. in the Session Room 103. The Session will meet immediately
afterward to receive new members. Please be in touch with Joanna
Adams at joannamadams@bellsouth.net or 404.876.7396 x11 to let her
know of your interest.

PRAYER GROUP
The Prayer Group meets on every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in G-1. All are
welcome. Prayer requests may be dropped in the offering plate, sent to
the church office at office@morningsidepc.org or e-mailed directly to
colliermaxwell@hotmail.com.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE
The Bible Class - Scripture, Culture, and Agriculture:
An Agrarian Reading of the Bible

Next week, Morningside's Bible Class finishes this four-week series with a
study of the "Agrarian Prophets", Amos and Hosea. Much of the poetic
language used by these two minor prophets relies on imagery and analogies
drawn from the natural world. Both of these prophets, like contemporary
agrarian writers, call for repentance, a change of both thought and action
that extends beyond the personal sphere. We will examine the meaning of
the prophetic language of Amos and Hosea in a (post) industrial context.
The series takes its title from a new book of essays by Duke Divinity
School professor Ellen Davis that explore passages in the Old Testament
that show pervasive concern for the care of the earth and praise for the God
of creation.
This class is taught by Associate Pastor Chris Henry and meets at 9:45 a.m.
in its new location, on the second floor in the Morningside Room 201.
