WORSHIP MARCH 8, 2009
SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP Joanna Adams
Leader: Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised.
People: Your name, O God, like your praise, reaches to the ends of
the earth.
Leader: We will ponder your steadfast love, O God, in the midst of your
temple.
People: We will tell the next generation that this is our God who
will be our guide forever.
All: Let us worship God!
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 223 O My Soul, Bless Your Redeemer
(verses 1 through 6)
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Beloved God, whose mercy is everlasting and whose grace endures forever,
look with favor upon us as we confess our sin. Lift our minds from earthly
things to the vision of your heavenly commonwealth. We revel in self-glory;
we delight in vain pursuits; we worship the idols of our base desires. Forgive
our resistance to your life-giving Spirit. Forgive our shortsighted behavior
and reconcile us through Jesus to your eternal will. Empower us to embrace
and display your holy claims on our lives, to the honor of our Lord and
Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 280)
The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three-year-olds are in
Room 204; Pre-K in G-11; K - 2nd grade in G-1; 3rd - 5th grades in G-3.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE FIRST READING Psalm 22:23-31 (page 474 in the Pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM In Thee, O Lord Rolle
In Thee, O Lord, have I put my trust. Let me never be afraid. Incline Thine ear to me and
save me, O Lord. Deliver me, O Lord in Thy righteousness. Be Thou my fortress and my
sure defense, for Thou hast promised to save me. Deliver me.
THE SECOND READING Mark 2:1-12 (page 34 in the Pew Bible)
THE SERMON Lenten Pilgrimage
Sermon II: "The Incident at Capernaum" Christopher Henry
"When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven.'" Mark 2:5
* THE HYMN 380 O Christ, the Healer
* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose
again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right
hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the
quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
