OFF TO PEARLINGTON

This morning, we commission the 12 volunteers that are headed to Pearlington, MS this week to continue rebuilding this community that was devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.  Working through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, please keep the following in your prayers: James Beasley, Richard & Sarah Brownlee, David Cox, Ginny Fergus, Phyllis Grimes, Van Jensen, Bradley Odom, Lloyd Prince,
Duncan Spears, John Watson, David York.

MORNINGSIDE IN CONVERSATION WITH OTHER FAITHS

Plan to stay after worship today for the first in our series of three events this spring that highlight the perspective of another faith tradition in our diverse city. This afternoon, our first speaker in the series will be Tayyibah Taylor, who is the founding editor-in-chief of Azizah Magazine, which provides a vehicle for the voice of Muslim-American women that shatters stereotypes and promotes understanding. Taylor is a well-respected leader in interfaith initiatives in our city and around the world, and we are delighted that she is here today to begin this series. The forum will take place in Room 201 at 12:15pm. This series will continue on April 26, when our speaker will be Rabbi Ron Segal, who is Senior Rabbi at Temple Sinai and a leading voice in Atlanta's Jewish community. On May 17, we will welcome a representative from the Hindu community in Atlanta.  Please make plans to be a part of this exciting and timely series at Morningside, as we learn from the rich religious perspectives that surround us.

MORNINGSIDE HOSTS PASTORS BREAKFAST WITH MRS. ROSALYNN CARTER AS THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Mrs. Rosalynn Carter will speak during the regular monthly breakfast dialogue of the Regional Council of Churches to discuss how our faith calls us to care for our friends, family, and neighbors who suffer from mental illnesses. The breakfast will be held Thursday, March 19, at 7:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. Participants include Dr. Thom Bornemann, director of the Carter Center's Mental Health Program, and Dr. Branko Radulovacki, creator of Faithworks , an initiative to help the mentally ill within the interfaith community. Contact Ethel Ware Carter at ecarter@rccatl.org or 404-523-5554 ext. 231, for reservations (The breakfast is open to Morningside's congregation; however, seating is limited.)

BIG FUN THIS SATURDAY

All elementary age children are welcome to join in Big Fun this Saturday, March 21, 10 a.m. -1 p.m. here at MPC. RSVP by this Tuesday, March 17 to let Melinda know that you will be attending to learn about Lent, build a planter for Habitat house and enjoy lunch and games together.

SUNDAY FORUM ON ECONOMIC CRISIS

Next Sunday, March 22, Morningside elder Bobbie McCrackin, who is Vice President & Public Affairs Officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, will lead a conversation on the economic downturn. How bad is it? What makes it different from recent recessions? How effective has the effort to return normalcy to the financial system been? What is the outlook? Bring your own questions and perspective as Bobbie draws on her experience and expertise to lead us in an enlightening discussion on one of the most pressing issues of our time. Sunday Forums take place in Room 201 and begin at 12:15 p.m.

SUMMER CAMP REGISTRATION

It's not time to get out your bathing suits and towels, but it is time to enroll your preschool children (ages 2-5) in MPP Summer Camp. Camp meets from 9:30-1:30 for two week sessions. For details, please go to the church website and follow the links to the preschool. Registration begins on March 16 and is first-come, first-serve.

HABITAT KICKS OFF MARCH 28!

Once again, MPC will partner this spring with neighboring churches to help a deserving family achieve affordable homeownership by building a Habitat for Humanity house. Build dates begin Saturday, March 28 and continue through May 16, although we take a break for Easter weekend.  Signup sheets are available in the Narthex today and online signup is also available (www.atlantahabitat.volunteerhub.com Join Code = Morningside).   Contact Lynsley Tyler (404.724.0606 or lynsley@bellsouth.net) and Chip Edgerton (jle1844@att.net) for more details.

SERVE DINNER ON EASTER

On the second Sunday of each month Morningside enjoys the wonderful privilege of serving 30 worthy gentlemen at the Druid Hills night shelter. What a better way to spend a short (6:30 - 7:45) evening on Easter, April 12 than participating in this ministry. Opportunities abound.  You may cook and drop off the food, serve the meal and visit, or do both. The sign up sheet is posted in the narthex.

HUNGER WALK RESULTS

Many thanks to all those who supported the Morningside walkers whose total of $1701 will benefit Intown Community Outreach.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE

The Bible Class - The Last Week
A Day-by-Day Account of Jesus' Final Week in Jerusalem

Next Sunday, Morningside's Bible Class will continue its Lenten Study on the final days leading to the crucifixion of Jesus through the lens of Mark's Gospel. As we study these well-known scripture passages, we will discuss their meaning for us as we travel our own Lenten Pilgrimage in 2009. Next week, our focus will be on Holy Wednesday, a dramatic day on which Jesus prepares his disciples for what is to come while Judas Iscariot silently slips away to betray him. The tension that has been growing steadily since Palm Sunday reaches its height as Mark tells us that the chief priests and scribes "were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him." In the midst of it all, Jesus pauses at Bethany to instruct his disciples. The lesson is one of costly discipleship, one that will challenge and inspire us on this Lenten pilgrimage. This class is taught by Associate Pastor Chris Henry and meets at 9:45am in Room 201. Please join us!
