WORSHIP MARCH 22, 2009
FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff

THE INTROIT Praise Him, All Ye Little Children Bonner
Surely the Lord Is in This Place Wilson
(Children's Choir-Brittney Jaynes, director)

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP Christopher Henry
Leader: Blessed be the name of the Lord our God.
People: Who redeems us from sin and death.
Leader: For us and for the salvation of all, Christ became obedient unto death,
even death on a cross.
All: Blessed be the name of the Lord.

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 487 When Morning Gilds the Skies

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Almighty God, you love us, but we have not loved you. You call, but we have not
listened. We walk away from neighbors in need, wrapped in our own concerns. We
condone evil, prejudice, warfare, and greed. God of grace, help us to admit our sin,
so that as you come to us in mercy, we may repent, turn to you, and receive
forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 467)
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing, sent Him to die, I scarce
can take it in; that on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died
to take away my sin. Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee, how great
Thou art, how great Thou art!

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Sacrament of Baptism for special classes. Three-yearolds
are in Room 204; Pre-K in G-11; K - 2nd grade in G-1; 3rd - 5th grades in G-3.)

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
People: With joy and thanksgiving we welcome these children into Christ's
church. We are the family of God for we are all one in Christ.

THE CHORAL RESPONSE Child of Blessing, Child of Promise Copes

THE FIRST READING Ephesians 2:1-10 Sarah Mercer Chatel
(page 181 in the pew Bible)

THE ANTHEM Drop, Drop, Slow Tears Graham
Drop, drop, slow tears, and bathe those beauteous feet which brought from Heaven the
news and Prince of Peace. Cease not, wet eyes, His mercy to entreat; to cry for
vengeance sin doth never cease. In your deep floods drown all my faults and fears, nor let
His eye see sin, but through my tears.

THE SECOND READING Matthew 10:32-44 (page 10 in the pew Bible)

THE SERMON Lenten Pilgrimage
Sermon IV:
"Overheard Along the Way" Joanna Adams
But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink,
or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" Mark 10: 38

* THE HYMN 80 Jesus Walked This Lonesome Valley

* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH A Brief Statement of Faith
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
We trust in Jesus Christ,
fully human, fully God.
Jesus proclaimed the reign of God:
preaching good news to the poor
and release to the captives,
teaching by word and deed
and blessing the children,
healing the sick
and binding up the brokenhearted,
eating with outcasts,
forgiving sinners,
and calling all to repent and believe the gospel.
Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition,
Jesus was crucified,
suffering the depths of human pain
and giving his life for the sins of the world.
God raised this Jesus from the dead,
vindicating his sinless life,
breaking the power of sin and evil,
delivering us from death to life eternal.

THE OFFERTORY Voluntary in A Minor James

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 310 Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee (verses 1 through 5)

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE A Farewell Blessing Hopson
