WORSHIP APRIL 12, 2009
EASTER SUNDAY

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP Joanna Adams
Leader: This is the good news: the grave is empty, Christ is risen.
People: Alleluia!
Leader: This is the good news: the light shines in the darkness and the darkness
can never put it out.
People: Alleluia!
Leader: This is the good news: once we were no people, now we are God's
people.
All: Alleluia! Amen.

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 123 Jesus Christ Is Risen Today

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Mighty God, by your power Christ is raised from death to rule this
world in love. We confess that we have not always believed in him, but
fall into doubt and fear. True joy has no home in our hearts, and our
gratitude is slight. Forgive our dread of dying, our hopelessness, and set
us free to delight in the victory of Jesus Christ, who was dead but lives,
and who will put down every power to hurt or destroy when your
promised kingdom comes. Grant us to die daily to sin, that we may
evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus
Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one
God, now and forever. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 119)
The strife is o'er, the battle done, the victory of life is won.
The song of triumph has begun. Alleluia!

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children are always welcome in the Sanctuary during worship. Should you find that your child grows restless,
there is child care available. Infants are cared for in the Nursery in Room 105, toddlers 18 months through two
years in Room112. Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Baptism for special classes. Preschoolers
are in Room G-11 and K-5th grade are in Room G-1.)

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
People: With joy and thanksgiving we welcome this child into Christ's
church. We are the family of God for we are all one in Christ.

THE CHORAL RESPONSE Alleluia, Alleluia! Give Thanks Fishel

THE FIRST LESSON Psalm 98 (page 521 in the pew Bible)

THE ANTHEM How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place (from A German Requiem) Brahms
How lovely is Thy dwelling place, O Lord of Hosts! For my soul, it longeth, yea fainteth for the
courts of the Lord; my soul and body crieth out, yea, for the living God. O blest are they that dwell
within Thy house; they praise Thy name evermore!

THE SECOND LESSON Mark 16:1-8 (page 51 in the pew Bible)

THE SERMON "Missing Easter" Christopher Henry
But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee;
there you will see him, just as he told you. Mark 16:7

* THE HYMN 115 Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain

* THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose
again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right
hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the
quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Hallelujah (from Christ on the Mount of Olives) Beethoven
Hallelujah unto God's almighty Son. Praise the Lord, ye bright angelic choirs, in holy
songs of joy. Man, proclaim His grace and glory. Hallelujah!

* THE RESPONSE AND PRAYER OF INTERCESSION AND DEDICATION (Hymn 150)
Praise yet our Christ again. Alleluia! Amen!
Life shall not end the strain. Alleluia! Amen!
On heaven's blissful shore His goodness we'll adore,
Singing forevermore, "Alleluia! Amen!"

* THE HYMN 118 The Day of Resurrection!

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE How Can I Keep from Singing? arr. Ellingboe
My life flows on in endless song above earth's lamentation. I hear the real, though far-off hymn that
hails a new creation. No storm can shake my inmost calm while to that rock I'm clinging. Since Christ
is Lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing? What though the tempest around me roar, I
hear the truth; it liveth. What though the darkness around me close, songs in the night it giveth.
