WORSHIP APRIL 19, 2009
SECOND SUNDAY AFTER EASTER

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP Joanna Adams
Leader: The Lord says, "Come, everyone who is thirsty-here is water!
People: Come, you that have no money-buy grain and eat!
Leader: Come! Buy wine and milk-it will cost you nothing!
People: Why spend money on what does not satisfy? Why spend
your wages and still be hungry?
Leader: Listen now, my people, and come to me; come to me, and you will
have life," says the Lord.
All: "I will make a lasting covenant with you and give you the
blessings I promised to David."

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 111 Good Christians All, Rejoice and Sing

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal Splendor, Light of light and God of gods, you have shone upon us and we
have seen your glory, shining in the face of Jesus Christ our Lord. Bathed in your
light, our faith and our life are shown to be shrouded and tarnished. We have not
loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength; we have not loved our
neighbors as ourselves. Yet in your great mercy you forgive what we have been. We
pray that you now will amend what we are and direct what we shall be, that we may
henceforth walk in your light, delight in your will, and reflect your radiance, to the
glory of your holy name. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 119)
The strife is o'er, the battle done, the victory of life is won.
The song of triumph has begun. Alleluia!

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Recognition of Seminary Interns for special classes.
Three-year-olds are in Room 204; Pre-K in G-11; K - 2nd grade in G-1; 3rd - 5th grades in G-3.)

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

RECOGNITION OF SEMINARY INTERNS Rebekah Diehl, Kevin Weber, Nancy Meehan Yao
People: Eternal and most gracious God, we give thanks to you for all your faithful
people who serve your cause. We praise you today for the good work and generous
spirits of your servants, Kevin, Nancy, and Rebekah. For the way they have touched
our lives, shaped our discipleship, and represented your presence and love among
us, we praise you. May their lives in the years to come be blessed with a strong
commitment to the church and its members. Keep them steady in their journey of
faith and committed to Jesus Christ our Lord, in whose name we pray. Amen.

THE FIRST READING Deuteronomy 10:12-22 (page 161 in the pew Bible)

THE ANTHEM Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal arr. Alice Parker
Hark, I hear the harps eternal ringing on the farther shore, as I near those swollen
waters, with their deep and solemn roar. Hallelujah, praise the Lamb! Glory to the
great I Am! And my soul though stained with sorrow, fading as the light of day, passes
swiftly over those waters to the city far away. Souls have crossed before me, saintly, to
that land of perfect rest, and I hear them singing faintly in the mansions of the blest.

THE SECOND READING Acts 4:32-35 (page 114 in the pew Bible)

THE SERMON "The Witness of Solidarity" The Rev. Dr. Samuel Adams
Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul...Acts 4:32a

* THE HYMN 414 As Those of Old Their Firstfruits Brought

* THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy
Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose
again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right
hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the
quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Kyrie Antonio de Cabezon

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 434 Today We All Are Called to Be Disciples

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Praise to the Lord, the Almighty arr. Mark Hayes
