WORSHIP JUNE 21, 2009
12TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Our preparation for worship is as follows: Before the prelude begins, the liturgist for the
morning will greet the congregation from the lectern, saying "The Lord be with you." The
people will respond, "And also with you." At this point, the prelude will begin. After the
prelude, the chimes will be sounded, and the call to worship will take place, followed by the
processional hymn. Our goal is to make the sanctuary as worshipful as possible as the
congregation gathers to honor God's holy name.

THE GATHERING
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Voluntary in A Minor Prelleur

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP Joanna Adams
Leader: Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you
rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly
in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my
burden is light.
People: Thanks be to God.
All: Let us offer God our hymns of praise.

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 482 Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word,
and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and
strength; we have not loved our neighbors and ourselves. In your mercy forgive
what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall
be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of
your holy name. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 473)
For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth,
and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild, Lord of all to thee we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three-year-olds are in
Room 208; Pre-K in 011; K - 2nd grade in 001; 3rd - 5th grades in G-3.)

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE FIRST READING Psalm 51:1-17 (responsive) (page 492 in the pew Bible)

THE ANTHEM The Apple Tree Scottish folk song, arr. Scott
The tree of life my soul hath seen, laden with fruit and always green, the trees of nature fruitless
be compared with Christ, the apple tree. His beauty doth all things excel, by faith I know but ne'er
can tell the glory which I now can see in Jesus Christ, the apple tree. For happiness I long have
sought, and pleasure dearly I have bought. I missed of all but now I see ‘tis found in Christ. I'm
weary with my former toil. Here I will sit and rest awhile, under the shadow I will be, of Jesus
Christ. This fruit doth make my soil to thrive. It keeps my dying faith alive, which makes my soul
in haste to be with Jesus Christ, the apple tree.

THE SECOND READING Luke 15:11-32 (page 73 in the pew Bible)

THE SERMON "The Forgiving Child" P.C. Enniss

* THE HYMN 345 Dear Lord and Father of Mankind

* THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose
again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right
hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the
quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Chansonette/Chant Pontificale Young

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 354 Guide My Feet

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Immortal, Invisible Thiman
