WORSHIP JUNE 28, 2009
13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Our preparation for worship is as follows: Before the prelude begins, the liturgist for the morning
will greet the congregation from the lectern, saying "The Lord be with you." The people will
respond, "And also with you." At this point, the prelude will begin. After the prelude, the chimes
will be sounded, and the call to worship will take place, followed by the processional hymn. Our
goal is to make the sanctuary as worshipful as possible as the congregation gathers to honor God's
holy name.
THE GATHERING
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Grand Chorus in F Franck
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP Bill Humphries
Leader: Come, let us worship the Lord,
People: Whose law revives the soul.
Leader: Come, let us worship the Lord,
People: Whose testimony instructs the mind.
Leader: Come, let us worship the Lord,
People: Whose precepts gladden the heart.
Leader: Come, let us worship the Lord,
People: And the Lord our God shall bless us!
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 288 I Sing the Mighty Power of God
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of Majesty, you have drawn near to us, but we have turned away from
your light. You have chosen us to be your people, but we confess that we have
lived as though we belonged to ourselves. Forgive us for going the way of the
world, doing the works of darkness, and forgetting your law of love toward
God and neighbor. Empower us by your Spirit to be faithful followers of
Jesus, who taught us by word and example how to live as your children, to
your honor and glory. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 466)
My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all
the earth abroad the honors of Thy name.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three-year-olds are in
Room 208; Pre-K in 011; K - 2nd grade in 001; 3rd - 5th grades in G-3.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE FIRST READING Revelation 10:8-11 Tim Gargis
(page 236 in the pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM The Heavens Are Telling (from The Creation) Joseph Haydn
Trio: Sheryl Wingert, Gabriel Couret, Chris Hawkins
The heavens are telling the glory of God. The wonder of his work displays the firmament. The day
that is coming speaks to the day, the night that is gone to following night. In all the lands resounds
the word, never unperceived, ever understood.
THE SECOND READING Ezekiel 3:1-11 (page 725 in the pew Bible)
THE SERMON Four of the Strangest Books in the Bible Christopher Henry
I: Ezekiel
He said to me, "O mortal, eat what is offered to you; eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel." Ezekiel 3:1
* THE HYMN 304 Jesus Loves Me
* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
The one sufficient revelation of God is Jesus Christ, the Word of God incarnate,
to whom the Holy Spirit bears unique and authoritative witness
through the Holy Scriptures, which are received and obeyed as the word
of God written. The Scriptures are not a witness among others, but the
witness without parallel. The church has received the books of the Old
and New Testaments as prophetic and apostolic testimony in which it
hears the word of God and by which its faith and obedience are nourished
and regulated. God's word is spoken to the church today where the
Scriptures are faithfully preached and attentively read in dependence on
the illumination of the Holy Spirit and with readiness to receive their
truth and direction.
-from the Confession of 1967
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Morning Has Broken Gaelic, arr. Colvin
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
* THE HYMN 327 O Word of God Incarnate
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE May the Road Rise to Meet You Turner
