WELCOME LISA LARGES
This morning, we welcome as our guest preacher Lisa Larges, Minister Coordinator of That All May Freely Serve, a national organization of Presbyterians that advocates for an inclusive and welcoming church. Lisa has demonstrated courage, patience, and deep commitment to the Presbyterian Church (USA) in advocating for ordination of all qualified candidates for ministry, regardless of sexual orientation. Lisa makes her home in San Francisco and travels throughout the country preaching God’s love, welcome, and justice.
CONGRATULATIONS TO
Andrew and Susan Kimball on the birth of their daughter, Lillian Jane Kimball, on July 31 (big sister is Annie).
COMMON GROUND
This is Pick-a-Pan Sunday! Take home an empty pan and return it to the church by 10 a.m. this Tuesday, August 11 filled with the requested item. Thank you for supporting our monthly efforts to provide lunch for 40 men attending the Common Ground program at AIDS Alliance for Faith & Health. Please come in via our new entry and leave your pan on the table inside the stairwell.
HELP AT A WORKDAY
All hands needed this Wednesday, August 12 as we work on the three elementary age classrooms to get them ready for the fall. Contact Melinda at msandkam@morningsidepc.org to let her know that you can help during the 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. workday.
SUNDAY SCHOOL KICK OFF
Join kids on the front lawn for a light breakfast and fun activities next Sunday, August 16, 9:45-10:45 a.m. They will “bridge” to their new age groups, and we will be giving tours of the elementary age rooms. Adults and children alike are welcome!
AUGUST COLLECTION
Intown Community Assistance (ICA) is currently in a visioning process, working to determine its calling as a mission effort in the 30306 and 30307 community. In the meantime, however, ICA supports the work of Mercy Church which serves homeless members of our community and is requesting help with the needs of this worthy organization. MPC will be collecting the following to help this very needy population: new men’s T-shirts (size large and extra-large), new men’s socks and reading glasses. Collection baskets will be in the narthex August 2-23. For more information, please contact Nancy Collins at ncollins0209@gmail.com or 770.842.3959.
AN EVENING WITH MAC FRAMPTON: POWERHOUSE PIANO!
Join Mac as he takes us on a trip from Gershwin to Bach and back. Renowned pianist and MPC member Mac Frampton will be offering a free concert here at MPC on Wednesday, August 19, 7:30 p.m. Invite your neighbors and friends. Make it a fun and easy summer outing by pre-ordering dinners with Terra Terroir by Saturday, August 15 (see menu on our website and in the narthex). Meals will be ready and waiting for you in Fellowship Hall at 6:30 p.m. Childcare provided.
NEXT LYDIA’S CIRCLE MEETING
The next Lydia’s Circle meeting for young moms and female professionals at MPC will be held Thursday, August 13 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Cathy Keaveney’s house, 714 Sherwood Road, 30324. Please RSVP to Tara Parrish, taraparrish@bellsouth.net.
SAYING GOOD-BYE TO MARTHA
As our preschool director Martha Hartzell wraps up her three years with us this month, we look forward to celebrating and saying good bye on Saturday, August 22, 2-5 p.m. at the home of Jay and Lele Ruby (1797 Meadowdale Ave.). Drop by this Open House to give Martha all our best.
YOUNG ADULTS END-OF-SUMMER BARBECUE
We may be nearing the end of summer, but there's still time to enjoy one more summer tradition. Join the Young Adults for a casual barbecue get-together following worship on Sunday, August 30, at Fox Bros. Barbecue (1238 DeKalb Ave. in Candler Park). Please RSVP to Lisa Harris at Lisa.S.Harris@gmail.com or 770.856.2714.
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE
The Bible Class
Reading Romans with Reformers
Next Sunday, August 16, Morningside's Bible Class will we begin a new series on Paul's Letter to the Romans. This fall, we will study Romans with one another and alongside the great commentaries of our predecessors in the Reformed Tradition, especially John Calvin and Karl Barth. We will explore the ways in which this ancient letter has spoken to the church through the centuries and continues to do so in our time. Next week, the series begins with an introduction to the letter itself and discussion of its major themes. Whether you are a regular or have never attended the class before, please plan to join fellow Morningsiders on this journey through scripture. The Morningside Bible Class meets each Sunday at 9:45am in Room 201 and is taught by Associate Pastor Chris Henry.
Children’s Classes
Next Sunday, the Preschool classes’ Bible lesson will tell the story of Jesus healing a centurion’s slave, teaching that Jesus cares about us when we are sick. We are the children of God. (Luke 7: 1 – 10) Our Elementary children will continue their summer study, Books of the Bible, as they explore the General Epistles: John 1-2-3.
