WORSHIP AUGUST 9, 2009
19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Our preparation for worship is as follows: Before the prelude begins, the liturgist for the morning
will greet the congregation from the lectern, saying "The Lord be with you." The people will
respond, "And also with you." At this point, the prelude will begin. After the prelude, the chimes
will be sounded, and the call to worship will take place, followed by the processional hymn. Our
goal is to make the sanctuary as worshipful as possible as the congregation gathers to honor God's
holy name.
THE GATHERING Christopher Henry

THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious God, have mercy upon us as we make our confession. We question
your judgment when your will conflicts with our own. We are reluctant to
follow the course you prescribe. Our patience grows thin when you intrude
in life's journey, causing us to veer from the path we pursue. We seek to be
faithful and obey your directions, but our own desires delay us in fulfilling
your will. Have mercy upon us and deliver us from sin. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 280)
The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three-year-olds are in
Room 208; Pre-K in 011; K - 2nd grade in 001; 3rd - 5th grades in G-3.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE MINUTE MESSAGE
THE FIRST LESSON Psalm 121 (page 539 in the pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM Christ's Flock Martin Shaw
In Christ's own flock, let love be surely placed. From Christ's own flock, let concord hate
expel. Of Christ's own flock let love be so embraced, as we in Christ, and Christ in us may
dwell. Christ is the author of all unity from whence proceedeth all felicity. O sing unto this
glittering glorious King. Let heart and voice like bells of silver ring. Alleluia.
THE SECOND LESSON Matthew 14:22-36 (page 15 in the pew Bible)
THE SERMON "Help! And Other Short, Useful Prayers" Lisa Larges
But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" Matthew 14:30
* THE HYMN 241 Behold the Goodness of Our Lord
* THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy
Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again
from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of
God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick
and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Lamb of God Twila Paris, arr. Raney
