WORSHIP AUGUST 30, 2009
22ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Our preparation for worship is as follows: Before the prelude begins, the liturgist for the morning
will greet the congregation from the lectern, saying "The Lord be with you." The people will
respond, "And also with you." At this point, the prelude will begin. After the prelude, the chimes
will be sounded, and the call to worship will take place, followed by the processional hymn. Our
goal is to make the sanctuary as worshipful as possible as the congregation gathers to honor God's
holy name.
THE GATHERING Christopher Henry
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Come, Holy Ghost, Lord God Buxtehude
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path
that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers;
People: but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they
meditate day and night.
All: They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their
fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they
do, they prosper. Thanks be to God! (From Psalm 1)
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 464 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, you pardon all who truly repent and turn to you. We humbly
confess our sins and ask your mercy. We have not loved you with a pure heart,
nor have we loved our neighbor as ourselves. We have not done justice, loved
kindness, or walked humbly with you, our God. Have mercy on us, O God, in
your loving-kindness. In your great compassion, cleanse us from our sin. Create
in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Do not cast
us from your presence, or take your Holy Spirit from us. Restore to us the joy
of your salvation and sustain us with your bountiful Spirit. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 466)
My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all
the earth abroad the honors of Thy name.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three-year-olds are in
Room 208; Pre-K in 011; K - 1st grade in 001; 2nd - 3rd grade in 003; 4th - 6th grade in 005.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE FIRST LESSON Psalm 34:1-10 (responsive) (page 480 in the pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM Blessed Is the One Anderson
Blessed is the one who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of
sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the Lord, the law of the Lord, and
on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of living water
that yields its fruit in due season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
- Psalm 1
THE SECOND LESSON James 1:17-27 (page 215 in the pew Bible)
THE SERMON "What Makes Us Happy?" Joanna Adams
Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights,
with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. James 1:17
* THE HYMN 387 Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us
* A BRIEF STATEMENT OF FAITH (A Brief Statement of Faith-Presbyterian Church USA)
In a broken and fearful world
the Spirit gives us courage
to pray without ceasing,
to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior,
to unmask idolatries in Church and culture,
to hear the voices of peoples long silenced,
and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace.
In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit,
we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks
and to live holy and joyful lives,
even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth,
praying, "Come, Lord Jesus!"
With believers in every time and place,
we rejoice that nothing in life or in death
can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the
glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Sonata in G Major Scarlatti
*THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
* THE HYMN 145 Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart!
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Ode to Joy arr. Scholin
