WORSHIP SEPTEMBER 13, 2009
24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Our preparation for worship is as follows: Before the prelude begins, the liturgist for the morning
will greet the congregation from the lectern, saying "The Lord be with you." The people will
respond, "And also with you." At this point, the prelude will begin. After the prelude, the chimes
will be sounded, and the call to worship will take place, followed by the processional hymn. Our
goal is to make the sanctuary as worshipful as possible as the congregation gathers to honor God's
holy name.
THE GATHERING Joanna Adams
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Hymnus Liszt
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth!
People: Worship the Lord with gladness!
Leader: Come into God's presence with singing!
All: Enter the courts of the Lord with praise!
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 420 God of Grace and God of Glory
THE CALL TO CONFESSION John Morgan
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word,
and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we
have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be.
God of mercy: Help us to forgive, as you have forgiven us. Help us to trust
you, even when hope is failing. Help us to take up our cross daily and follow
you in your redeeming work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 280)
The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three-year-olds are in
Room 208; Pre-K in 011; K - 2nd grade in 001; 3rd - 5th grades in G-3.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE FIRST LESSON Matthew 5:1-11 (page 4 in the pew Bible)
(read responsively)
THE ANTHEM Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life Sampson
Come my Way, my Truth, my Life! Such a Way as gives us breath, such a Truth as ends all
strife, such a Life as killeth Death. Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength! Such a Light as
shows a feast, such a Feast as mends in length, such a Strength as makes his guest. Come, my Joy,
my Love, my Heart! Such a Joy as none can move, such a Love as none can part, such a Heart as
joys in love. text-George Herbert
THE SECOND LESSON Romans 12:1-8 (page 151 in the pew Bible)
THE SERMON "At Odds With the World" Joanna Adams
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God -
what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2
* THE HYMN 525 Here I Am, Lord
* THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy
Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again
from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of
God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick
and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Offertory on ‘Salvationist' arr. Birchwood
*THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
* THE HYMN 418 God, Bless Your Church with Strength!
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Great Lord God! Thy Kingdom Shall Endure Handel
