WORSHIP OCTOBER 4, 2009
WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY
Our preparation for worship is as follows: Before the prelude begins, the liturgist for the morning will
greet the congregation from the lectern, saying "The Lord be with you." The people will respond, "And
also with you." At this point, the prelude will begin. After the prelude, the chimes will be sounded, and
the call to worship will take place, followed by the processional hymn. Our goal is to make the
sanctuary as worshipful as possible as the congregation gathers to honor God's holy name.
THE GATHERING Christopher Henry
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE How Firm a Foundation arr. Broughton
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the
Holy Spirit be with you all.
People: And also with you.
Leader: At one time we were strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope
and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus we who once were far
off have been brought near to God by the blood of Christ.
People: He is our peace; in his flesh he has broken down the walls that
divide us.
All: Thanks be to God.
* THE HYMN 220 All People That on Earth Do Dwell
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Almighty God: from the ends of the earth you have gathered us around
Christ's holy table. Forgive our separate ways. Forgive everything that keeps
us apart, and the prides that prevent our proper reunion. O God, have mercy
on your church, troubled and divided. Renew in us true unity of purpose;
that we may break bread together, and, with one voice, praise Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 441)
Sure as Thy truth shall last, to Zion shall be given the brightest glories earth
can yield, and brighter bliss of heaven. Amen.
