WORSHIP OCTOBER 11, 2009
28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Our preparation for worship is as follows: Before the prelude begins, the liturgist for the morning
will greet the congregation from the lectern, saying "The Lord be with you." The people will
respond, "And also with you." At this point, the prelude will begin. After the prelude, the chimes
will be sounded, and the call to worship will take place, followed by the processional hymn. Our
goal is to make the sanctuary as worshipful as possible as the congregation gathers to honor God's
holy name
.

THE GATHERING Christopher Henry
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Prelude in G Bender

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Lord, open unto us light for our darkness, courage for our fear;
People: Open unto us peace for our turmoil, strength for our weakness;
Leader: Open unto us wisdom for our confusion, forgiveness for our sins;
People: Open unto us - your Self for our selves.
All: Lord, Lord, open unto me. Amen. Augustine of Hippo (354-430 A.D.)

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 229 From All That Dwell Below the Skies

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, our judge and redeemer, we confess that we have tried to hide
from you, for we have done wrong. We have lived for ourselves, and apart
from you. We have turned from our neighbors, and refused to bear the burdens
of others. We have ignored the pain of the world, and passed by the hungry,
the poor, and the oppressed. In your great mercy forgive our sins and free
us from selfishness, that we may choose your will and obey your commandments;
through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH A Brief Statement of Faith Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
In life and in death we belong to God.
Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit,
we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel,
whom alone we worship and serve.
In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit,
we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives,
even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth,
praying, "Come, Lord Jesus!"
With believers in every time and place,
we rejoice that nothing in life or in death
can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.
