WORSHIP OCTOBER 25, 2009
REFORMATION SUNDAY
Our preparation for worship is as follows: Before the prelude begins, the liturgist for the morning
will greet the congregation from the lectern, saying "The Lord be with you." The people will
respond, "And also with you." At this point, the prelude will begin. After the prelude, the chimes
will be sounded, and the call to worship will take place, followed by the processional hymn. Our
goal is to make the sanctuary as worshipful as possible as the congregation gathers to honor God's
holy name.
THE GATHERING Christopher Henry
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott Buxtehude
THE INTROIT Every Time I Feel the Spirit Spiritual
I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light Thomerson
Treble Choir-Brittney Jaynes, director
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: You are holy, O Lord, our Creator, giving us mercies beyond number.
People: You are holy, O Savior Jesus Christ, loving and setting us free.
Leader: You are holy, O Spirit of truth and peace, leading us in ways that are right.
All: O holy, eternal Trinity, we praise you for ever and ever.
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 260 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, you deliver from distress those who cry to you in their trouble.
We who are in trouble raise our voices to you. Deliver us, we pray, from
the burden of sin: from wanting too much to impress others and needing to
prove our worth; from inner confusion that has us say one thing but do another-
foolishly pursuing what does not lead to life; from oppressive and unjust
practices and from bondage to greed and desire, Lord, deliver and redeem
us. Gather us in from our wandering and lead us by your way, until we reach
the place you prepare for those who follow you. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 466)
My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all
the earth abroad the honors of Thy name.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Passing of the Peace for special classes. Three-year-olds
