WORSHIP JANUARY 17, 2010
2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Our preparation for worship is as follows: Before the prelude begins, the liturgist for the morning will
greet the congregation from the lectern, saying "The Lord be with you." The people will respond, "And
also with you." At this point, the prelude will begin. After the prelude, the chimes will be sounded, and
the call to worship will take place, followed by the processional hymn. Our goal is to make the
sanctuary as worshipful as possible as the congregation gathers to honor God's holy name.
THE GATHERING Christopher Henry
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP

People: Praise the Lord.
Leader: As dusk approaches and well into the night;
People: Praise the Lord.

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 263 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious and Merciful God, you have created us in your image. Yet, too
quickly we deny your life-giving ways. You teach us to forgive as we have been
forgiven. Yet, we cling to our anger and disappointments; we hold on to our
hurts and frustrations. You embrace us with your love. Yet, we hoard this gift;
hesitant to embrace our neighbor and share the love you so freely give. By your
steadfast love and mercy, release us from our sinfulness. Return to us the joy of
your salvation. Hear, O Lord, our prayer for your forgiveness. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 280)
The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three-year-olds are in
Room 208; Pre-K in 011; K - 1st grade in 001; 2nd - 3rd grade in 003; 4th - 6th grade in 005.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE FIRST LESSON Psalm 36:5-10 (page 482 in the pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM In Heavenly Love Abiding Burroughs
In heavenly love abiding, no task my heart shall fear; and safe is such confiding, for nothing
changes here. The storm may roar without me, my heart may low be laid; but God is round about
me, and can I be dismayed? Wherever He may guide me, no want shall turn me back; my Shepherd
is beside me, and nothing can I lack. His wisdom ever waketh, His sight is never dim; He knows the
way He taketh, and I will walk with Him. Green pastures are before me, which yet I have not seen.
Bright skies will soon be over me. My life I cannot measure, the path of life is free; my Savior has
my treasure, and He will walk with me.
THE SECOND LESSON Luke 2:25-38 (page 55 in the pew Bible)
THE SERMON "The Faith That Looks Forward" Thomas Long
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout,
looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. Luke 2:25
* THE HYMN 339 Be Thou My Vision
THE OFFERTORY Prelude on ‘Brother James' Air' Wright
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD'S SUPPER
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Leader: Lift up your hearts!
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give thanks and praise.
Sanctus: Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might, (Hymn 581)
Heaven and earth are full of your glory; Hosanna in the
highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna
in the highest.
Communion of the People
Prayer after the Meal
* THE HYMN 441 I Love Thy Kingdom, Lord (verses 1 through 5)
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Blessed Are Watson
Blessed are the poor in spirit; God has faithfully revealed that the riches of the kingdom
with their souls in Christ are sealed. And to those of tender mercy, from them falls as gentle
rain, grace and kindness, sweet compassion; mercy given and mercy gained. Blessed are the
true peacemakers, with contentment for the fold, they cling to promises of heaven, working
in the field of souls.
