Thought of the Week...
It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. We are made to live together because of the interrelated structure of reality. - Martin Luther King, Jr., in 'A Christmas Sermon on Peace" preached at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.
Welcome Mary Miller Brueggemann
Today we welcome the Rev. Mary Miller Brueggemann, who joins our staff as part-time Pastoral Assistant. Sunday's fellowship hour after worship will be sponsored by the Human Resources Committee in honor of Mary; please welcome her to Morningside!

Dear friends,
What a glorious weekend of celebration we shared on the 9th and 10th of January! Saturday evening's festivities could not have been more joyful or uplifting. It was one of those nights you wanted never to end, though perhaps one or two of you thought it never would when you saw the number of speakers! Actually, the time passed quickly, the dinner was delicious, the dancing was delightful, and Walter Huff and Kate Murray's music were heavenly. Profound thanks to each of you who worked so hard to make sure the tables were a floral feast for the eyes, the programs were perfectly done, and everyone had a great time. The gift of a portrait to be hung at Morningside fills me with gratitude for your generosity, and for the connection that I feel with this community. I was deeply touched by the exquisite stole presented by Mardee Rightmyer and Trenton Tunnell. The event is rich with enough memories to last several lifetimes.
The Sunday morning worship service thrilled my soul and took our privilege of glorifying God to a new level of meaning and beauty. The anthem, commissioned by Walter and the Choir, was one of the great surprises of my life. It turns out that "I am with You in spirit," the anthem so elegantly created by Arlan Sunnarborg, had been in the works for six months or more. I usually am opposed to keeping secrets in the church, but this secret turned out to be the exception to the rule. The text, from Colossians 2, is one I referred to in a sermon more than a year ago. I had found my mother's King James Bible and sat down to look at it. The pages fell open to Colossians 2, where my mother had written in pencil the words "for Jo" beside the verse that reads, "Though I be absent in the flesh, I am with you in spirit." Never have I felt more surrounded by the Spirit of God or the communion of the saints than I did during the singing of the anthem. After church, it was wonderful to say such sweet farewells to so many of you at the lovely Fellowship Hour party. I left that afternoon with a heart loaded with love for each of you who have meant so much to Al and to our family and to me.
You may have heard by now that on the following Tuesday, I slipped on some left-over ice on our driveway and spent most of the day in the Emergency Room. I have strained the hamstring on my right leg and messed with my already messed up back, but am doing better each day. I am no longer on a walker and, as of today, am able to cut back on pain meds. So far, I have had one great day of retirement, but I expect many more before too long. Talk about an ungraceful exit! Thank you for your cards, calls, soup deliveries and flowers.
I like to conclude weddings with this blessing of Dame Julian of Norwich (1342-1416): . . .and all shall be well and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well. Let the people say Amen!
