WORSHIP JANUARY 31, 2010
4TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Our preparation for worship is as follows: Before the prelude begins, the liturgist for the morning will
greet the congregation from the lectern, saying "The Lord be with you." The people will respond, "And
also with you." At this point, the prelude will begin. After the prelude, the chimes will be sounded, and
the call to worship will take place, followed by the processional hymn. Our goal is to make the
sanctuary as worshipful as possible as the congregation gathers to honor God's holy name.

THE GATHERING Rev. Mary Miller Brueggemann
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Let all the earth acclaim God's name.
People: Come and see what God has done.
Leader: Let the sounds of praise be heard throughout the land.
People: Blessed is the One who calls us by name and claims us in
steadfast love.
Leader: As we gather in worship, let us make a joyful noise to God, all the earth.

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 455 All Creatures of Our God and King

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of life, grant us your forgiveness. We have been heedless in our thoughts,
cruel in our words, shameful in our actions. We are indifferent to a world made
sad by want and wastefulness. We pass by on the other side when we see our
neighbor in need. We ignore your call even when you call us by name. Grant us
your forgiveness, O God of life. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 464)
All thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays. Stars
and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and
mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, chanting bird and flowing fountain, call
us to rejoice in Thee.

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three-year-olds are in
Room 208; Pre-K in 011; K - 1st grade in 001; 2nd - 3rd grade in 003; 4th - 6th grade in 005.)

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS

THE FIRST LESSON Psalm 139:1-12 (responsive) (page 545 in the pew Bible)

THE ANTHEM God of Comfort, God of Courage Wilbur Chenoweth
God of comfort, God of courage, present help in time of need, who the fainting soul doth nourish, make us
strong in faith and deed. Though the mountains shake and crumble in the mighty crashing of the sea; keep us
steadfast, humble, ungirded, Lord, by thee. Through the ages moves a river, faithful souls who do thy will,
ever giving to the giver, those thy purpose shall fulfill. ‘Tis that pathway we are seeking, which thy loyal
saints have always trod; through earth's turmoil thou art speaking: "Peace! Be still! And know thy God."
They that labor in thy spirit shall their strength and power renew, shall the peace of God inherit-one with
thee. Like the eagle bravely soaring, they shall rise up strong. They shall triumph, thee adoring-God, the
source of all in all.

THE SECOND LESSON Jeremiah 1:4-10 (page 656 in the pew Bible)

THE SERMON "Simply Irresistible" Christopher Henry
"Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord." Jeremiah 1:8

* THE HYMN 248 You Are Before Me, Lord

* THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy
Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again
from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of
God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick
and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY I'm Gonna Live So God Can Use Me Spiritual

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 525 Here I Am, Lord

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE A Farewell Blessing Hopson
