WORSHIP FEBRUARY 14, 2010
TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD

Our preparation for worship is as follows: Before the prelude begins, the liturgist for the morning will
greet the congregation from the lectern, saying "The Lord be with you." The people will respond, "And
also with you." At this point, the prelude will begin. After the prelude, the chimes will be sounded, and
the call to worship will take place, followed by the processional hymn. Our goal is to make the sanctuary
as worshipful as possible as the congregation gathers to honor God's holy nam
e.

THE GATHERING Mary Miller Brueggemann
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: The Lord reigns from the cherubim throne, nations tremble, earth shakes!
People: The Lord of Zion is great, high above all peoples.
Leader: Almighty ruler, you love justice, you strengthen the upright and secure
equity for Jacob.
People: Bow down to worship at God's feet, lift up your voice in praise.
Holy is the Lord our God!
- from Psalm 99

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 474 O Splendor of God's Glory Bright

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of compassion, have mercy on us as we confess our sin. You have
brought light, yet we still dwell in darkness. Your word offers guidance, but we
choose to ignore your counsel. We bow to the gods of this world, choosing to
hide from your truth. Speak to us from beyond the clouds. Dazzle us with your
light. Restore and forgive us through Christ our Lord. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

To Thee, great One in Three, the highest praises be, hence evermore!
Thy sovereign majesty may we in glory see, and to eternity love and adore.

Questions to the Committee Members and Congregation
Prayer (unison)
Faithful God, in baptism you claimed us, and by your Holy Spirit you are working
in our lives, empowering us to live a life worthy of our calling. We thank you
for leading these disciples to this ministry and service. Give them the gifts of your
Holy Spirit to serve with compassion and vision. In the walk of faith and for the
work of ministry, give to your servants gladness, strength, and an abiding sense of
your presence. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ to whom, with you and the
Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON Exodus 34:29-35 (page 78 in the pew Bible)

THE ANTHEM A Light Shines Forth Clokey
A light shines forth unto the righteous, and gladness to the true of heart. Alleluia! The watchful ones stand at
the gate, bearing bright torches in their hands. O how bright, like the whiteness of snow, do the garments of
Paradise shine, as the faithful and holy ones stand in the light which shall never grow dim.

THE SECOND LESSON Luke 9:28-36 (page 65 in the pew Bible)

THE SERMON "A Clouded Vision" Christopher Henry

* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from A Brief Statement of Faith
In life and in death we belong to God.
Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit,
we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel,
whom alone we worship and serve.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
