WORSHIP FEBRUARY 21, 2010
FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT
Our preparation for worship is as follows: Before the prelude begins, the liturgist for the morning will
greet the congregation from the lectern, saying "The Lord be with you." The people will respond, "And
also with you." At this point, the prelude will begin. After the prelude, the chimes will be sounded, and
the call to worship will take place, followed by the processional hymn. Our goal is to make the sanctuary
as worshipful as possible as the congregation gathers to honor God's holy name.
THE GATHERING Mary Miller Brueggemann
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE O Man, Consider Thy Grievous Fall J.S. Bach
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Praise, O servants of the Lord; praise the name of the Lord.
People: Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time on and
forevermore.
Leader: From the rising of the sun to its setting the name of the Lord is to be
praised.
People: The Lord is high above all nations, and his glory above the
heavens.
Leader: Praise the Lord ! - from Psalm 113
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 356 Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of mercy, God of love, in humbleness of heart we confess our sins. We forget
to love and serve you, and wander from your ways. We are careless of your
world, and put its life in danger. We talk of our concern for others, but fail to
match our words with action. Merciful God, forgive us our sins and bring us to
everlasting life, through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (KYRIE) (Hymn 572)
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
* THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three-year-olds are in
Room 208; Pre-K in 011; K - 1st grade in 001; 2nd - 3rd grade in 003; 4th - 6th grade in 005.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE FIRST LESSON Psalm 32 (page 479 in the pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM Lord, I Cry to You Stone/Cox, arr. Hill
May my prayer be as incense, a sweet and fragrant offering. Lifted to your throne, raised
to you alone. Lord, I cry to you. Come quickly unto me, listen to my voice. May my hands
that are uplifted be my evening sacrifice, my morning supplication, be my noontime plea.
May the day I know your answer show a truth I then behold; your loving and your kindness,
my strength from days of old. Hear me, Lord, I cry to you.
THE SECOND LESSON Luke 7:36-50 (page 62 in the pew Bible)
THE SERMON Christopher Henry
Stories to Live by: The Parables of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke
Sermon I: "The Church at Its Best"
And he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."
* THE HYMN 396 O for a Closer Walk with God
* THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy
Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again
from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of
God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick
and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Prelude in B-flat Minor Bach
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
* THE HYMN 206 O Hear Our Cry, O Lord
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE The Lord Watch Between Me and Thee Eddleman
The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another. Amen.
- Genesis 31:49
