WORSHIP FEBRUARY 28, 2010
SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT
Our preparation for worship is as follows: Before the prelude begins, the liturgist for the morning will
greet the congregation from the lectern, saying "The Lord be with you." The people will respond, "And
also with you." At this point, the prelude will begin. After the prelude, the chimes will be sounded, and
the call to worship will take place, followed by the processional hymn. Our goal is to make the sanctuary
as worshipful as possible as the congregation gathers to honor God's holy name.
THE GATHERING Mary Miller Brueggemann
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
THE INTROIT Simply Gregorian (Kyrie) arr. Moore
Rise, Shine, Little Light Spirituals, arr. Albrecht
Lorenzo Sacchi and Carson Myers, soloists
Treble Choir (Brittney Jaynes, director)
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Come, sing with joy to God; shout to our Savior, our Rock.
People: Enter God's presence with praise; enter with shouting and song.
Leader: God cradles the depths of the earth, and holds fast the mountain peaks.
People: God shaped the ocean and owns it, and formed the earth by
hand.
Leader: Come, bow down and worship, and kneel to the Lord our maker.
People: This is our God, our shepherd; we are the flock led with care.
Leader: Let us worship God. - from Psalm 95
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 457 I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, we confess that it is all too easy for us to sacrifice our convictions
for convenience, your standards for status, your principles for promotion,
our souls for shallow and easy success. We are so easily seduced by power and
possessions. Forgive us our half-hearted devotion and our double-minded
spirit. Give us strength to turn toward you, in Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (KYRIE) (Hymn 572)
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
* THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three-year-olds are in
Room 208; Pre-K in 011; K - 1st grade in 001; 2nd - 3rd grade in 003; 4th - 6th grade in 005.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE FIRST LESSON 1 Corinthians 3:5-9 Link Marx
(page 157 in the pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM Christ Hath A Garden English folk song, arr. Near
Christ hath a garden walled around, a paradise of fruitful ground, chosen by love and fenced
by grace from out the world's wide wilderness. Like trees of spice his servants stand, there
planted by his mighty hand; by Eden's gracious streams, that flow to feed their beauty where
they grow. Awake, O wind of heaven, and bear their sweetest perfume through the air, stir
up, O south, the boughs that bloom, till the beloved Master come. That he may come, and
linger yet among the trees that he hath set; that he may evermore be seen to walk amid the
springing green.
THE SECOND LESSON Luke 8:4-15 (page 63 in the pew Bible)
THE SERMON Christopher Henry
Stories to Live by: The Parables of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke
Sermon II: "Inch by Inch, Row by Row"
A sower went out to sow his seed...Luke 8:5a
* THE HYMN 418 God, Bless Your Church With Strength!
* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH A Brief Statement of Faith Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
In life and in death we belong to God.
Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit,
we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel,
whom alone we worship and serve.
In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit,
we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives,
even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth,
praying, "Come, Lord Jesus!"
With believers in every time and place,
we rejoice that nothing in life or in death
can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
* THE HYMN 357 O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Amen Eddleman
