WORSHIP MARCH 7, 2010
THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT
Our preparation for worship is as follows: Before the prelude begins, the liturgist for the morning will
greet the congregation from the lectern, saying "The Lord be with you." The people will respond, "And
also with you." At this point, the prelude will begin. After the prelude, the chimes will be sounded, and
the call to worship will take place, followed by the processional hymn. Our goal is to make the sanctuary
as worshipful as possible as the congregation gathers to honor God's holy name.
THE GATHERING Melinda Sandkam
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.
People: Before the mountains were brought forth or ever you had
formed the earth and the world.
Leader: From everlasting to everlasting you are God.
People: A thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past,
or like a watch in the night.
Leader: Let your loveliness shine on us, and bless the work we do.
People: Let us worship God who brings wisdom to our hearts.
- from Psalm 90
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 446 Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious and holy God, forgive our feeble efforts to make you over to fit our image.
We want to follow you but are afraid to trust your promises. We find it easier
to restate your grace in easy pardon than it is to modify our ways. Sometimes we
believe that more possessions will bring us peace and well being. Forgive us, O
God, when we do not choose to remember your love divine all loves excelling.
Turn us toward you and make us over to fit your image. In Jesus name we pray.
Amen.
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (KYRIE) (Hymn 572)
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
* THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST

THE RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS
THE FIRST LESSON Deuteronomy 8:7-17 (page 159 in the pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM On Jordan's Stormy Banks I Stand Rentz
On Jordan's stormy banks I stand, and cast a wishful eye to Canaan's fair and happy land, where my
possessions lie. O'er all those wide extended plains shines one eternal day, when love forevermore shall
reign, and turn the night to day. There David stands with harp in hand as master of the choir; ten thousand
times was David blessed, the music rang with power. No fear or sorrows or distress shall reach
that blissful shore; all sickness, suffering, pain, and death are felt and feared no more. I'm bound for the
promise land; oh, who will come and go with me?
THE SECOND LESSON Luke 12:13-21 (page 70 in the pew Bible)
THE SERMON Christopher Henry
Stories to Live by: The Parables of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke
Sermon III: "God's Economy"
Then he told them a parable: "The land of a rich man produced abundantly." Luke 12:16
* THE HYMN 207 How Lovely, Lord
* THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy
Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from
the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the
Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the
dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of
saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Passacaglia (Christe, from Messe du Deuxieme Ton) Raison
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD'S SUPPER Robert Gray
