WORSHIP MARCH 14, 2010
FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT

Our preparation for worship is as follows: Before the prelude begins, the liturgist for the morning will
greet the congregation from the lectern, saying "The Lord be with you." The people will respond, "And
also with you." At this point, the prelude will begin. After the prelude, the chimes will be sounded, and
the call to worship will take place, followed by the processional hymn. Our goal is to make the sanctuary
as worshipful as possible as the congregation gathers to honor God's holy name.

THE GATHERING Mary Miller Brueggemann
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in God's word I hope.
People: My soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the
morning, more than those who watch for the morning.
Leader: Hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love,
People: And with God is great power to redeem.
Leader: It is God who will redeem us from all our iniquities. Gather now to
worship this God who loves and redeems.
-from Psalm 130

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 487 When Morning Gilds the Skies

* (The asterisk indicates parts of the worship when the congregation is invited to stand as they are able.)

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Have mercy on us, O God, according to your steadfast love, for we know our
sins, and we cannot overlook them. Sometimes we are tempted to serve with halfhearted
energy or to speak the truth in whispered tones. Give us faith to risk a
dangerous hope, to be ready to think as you teach, and to act as you lead. We
pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (KYRIE) (Hymn 572)
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

* THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three-year-olds are in
Room 208; Pre-K in 011; K - 1st grade in 001; 2nd - 3rd grade in 003; 4th - 6th grade in 005.)

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE FIRST LESSON Jeremiah 31:1-6 (page 689 in the pew Bible)

THE ANTHEM I Know Not What the Future Hath Zaninelli (adapted from
an American folk hymn)
I know not what the future hath of marvel or surprise, but this I know, that life and death
God's mercy underlies. No offering of my own I have, nor works my faith to prove. I can but
give the gifts He gave, and plead His love for love. I know not where His islands lift their
fronded palms in air, I only know I cannot drift beyond His love and care.
- poem by John Greenleaf Whittier

THE SECOND LESSON Luke 15:1-10 (page 73 in the pew Bible)

THE SERMON Christopher Henry
Stories to Live by: The Parables of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke
Sermon IV: "Just Text Me"
Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine
in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? Luke 15:4

* THE HYMN 280 Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound (verses 1 through 5)

* THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy
Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from
the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the
Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the
dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of
saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
