WORSHIP MARCH 21, 2010
FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT

Our preparation for worship is as follows: Before the prelude begins, the liturgist for the morning will
greet the congregation from the lectern, saying "The Lord be with you." The people will respond, "And
also with you." At this point, the prelude will begin. After the prelude, the chimes will be sounded, and
the call to worship will take place, followed by the processional hymn. Our goal is to make the sanctuary
as worshipful as possible as the congregation gathers to honor God's holy name.

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Eternal God, in whom we live and move and have our being, your face is hidden
from us by our sins, and we forget your mercy in the blindness of our hearts.
Cleanse us from all our offenses, and deliver us from proud thoughts and vain desires.
With lowliness and meekness may we draw near to you, confessing our
faults, confiding in your grace, and finding in you our refuge and strength;
through Jesus Christ your Son. Amen.

Questions to the Participants
Prayer (unison)
Faithful God, in baptism you claimed us; and by your Holy Spirit you are working in
our lives, empowering us to live a life worthy of our calling. We thank you for leading
these servants to this time and place. Establish in them your truth, and guide
them by your Holy Spirit, that in your service they may grow in faith, hope and love,
and be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be
honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON Psalm 22:19-31 (page 474 in the pew Bible)

THE ANTHEM Drop, Drop, Slow Tears Graham
Drop, drop, slow tears, and bathe those beauteous feet which brought from heaven the news and Prince of
Peace. Cease not, wet eyes, His mercy to entreat; to cry for vengeance, sin doth never cease. In your deep
floods, drown all my faults and fears, nor let His eye see sin, but through my tears. Amen.

THE SECOND LESSON Luke 19:11-28 (page 77 in the pew Bible)

THE SERMON Sara Hayden
Stories to Live by: The Parables of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke
Sermon V: "Following the Leader(s)"
He summoned ten of his slaves, and gave them ten pounds, and said to them,
‘Do business with these until I come back.' Luke 19:13

* THE HYMN 305 Jesus, Our Divine Companion

* THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy
Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from
the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the
Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the
dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of
saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Ave Verum Corpus (sung in Latin) Mozart
Jesus, Word of God incarnate, born of the Virgin Mary, on the cross his flesh was torn to atone for our sins.
Cleanse your people by your blood and water. Be for us our example, even at the time of death.

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 308 O Sing a Song of Bethlehem

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Psalm 4 Wright
