WORSHIP APRIL 4, 2010
EASTER SUNDAY
Our preparation for worship is as follows: Before the prelude begins, the liturgist for the morning will
greet the congregation from the lectern, saying "The Lord be with you." The people will respond, "And
also with you." At this point, the prelude will begin. After the prelude, the chimes will be sounded, and
the call to worship will take place, followed by the processional hymn. Our goal is to make the sanctuary
as worshipful as possible as the congregation gathers to honor God's holy name.
THE GATHERING Mary Miller Brueggemann
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Prelude (from Te Deum) Marc-Antoine Charpentier
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP

People: The Lord has become my salvation.

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 123 Jesus Christ Is Risen Today
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious God, by your power Christ is raised from the dead to rule this world
in love. Forgive us, if after the joy of this Easter day, we return to routine living,
forgetting the wonder of the empty tomb. Forgive us, if after the mystery of God's
triumph over sin and death, we fall victim to fear and despair. Forgive us, if after
this glorious day, the memory of resurrection truth should fade or grow weary.
By your Holy Spirit, empower us to live in the light of Easter hope. In the name of
the risen Christ we pray. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 119)
The strife is o'er, the battle done, the victory of life is won.
The song of triumph has begun. Alleluia!
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three-year-olds are in
Room 208; Pre-K in 011; K - 1st grade in 001; 2nd - 3rd grade in 003; 4th - 6th grade in 005.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 25:6-9 (page 613 in the pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM Lux Aeterna (from Requiem) John Rutter
Rebecca Shipley, soprano
I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, for they rest
from their labours: even so saith the Spirit.
Light eternal shine upon them, Lord, we pray: with saints and angels ever dwelling, for thy mercy's sake, may they
rest in peace. Grant them rest eternal, Lord our God, we pray to thee: and light perpetual shine on them forever.
(sung in English and Latin)
THE SECOND LESSON Luke 24:1-12 (page 84 in the pew Bible)
THE SERMON "What Are You Looking For?" Christopher Henry
"Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen." Luke 24:5b
* THE HYMN 115 Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain
* THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy
Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from
the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the
Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of
saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and
the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Te Deum Marc-Antoine Charpentier
(opening three movements: Te Deum Laudamus, Te Aeternum Patrem, Pleni Sunt Caeli)
We praise thee, O God: we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee: the Father
everlasting. To thee all angels cry aloud: the heavens, and all the powers therein. To thee Cherubim and
Seraphim continually do cry: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Sabaoth. Heaven and earth are full of the majesty
of thy glory. The glorious company of the Apostles praise thee. The goodly fellowship of the Prophets
praise thee. The noble army of Martyrs praise thee.
Solo ensemble: Gabriel Couret, Tami Giusto, Marie Oemler, Nadeen Paul, Linda Rozakis,
Rebecca Shipley, Stefanie Sudduth, Sheryl Wingert, John Wingert
* THE RESPONSE AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 150)
Praise yet our Christ again. Alleluia! Amen!
Life shall not end the strain. Alleluia! Amen!
On heaven's blissful shore His goodness we'll adore,
Singing forevermore, "Alleluia! Amen!"
* THE HYMN 423 Jesus Shall Reign Where'er the Sun (verses 1 through 5)
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE How Can I Keep from Singing? Lowry, arr. Ellingboe
My life flows on in endless song above earth's lamentation. I hear the real, though far-off hymn that
hails a new creation. No storm can shake my inmost calm while to that rock I'm clinging. Since Christ is
Lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing? What though the tempest around me roar, I
hear the truth; it liveth. What though the darkness around me close, songs in the night it giveth.
