SANCTUARY FLOWERS

Beginning this year on Mother’s and Father’s Days, we will have the opportunity to pay tribute to past and present loved ones (relatives/friends) who have impacted our lives with a memorial or tribute flower donation. If you would like to participate, see this week’s Mother’s Day insert.

MOTHER'S DAY OFFERING

Next Sunday, May 9 please consider joining with more than 200 Presbyterian congregations in Georgia to contribute to the Caring Hearts Fund.  This special offering benefits Presbyterian Homes, which provides exceptional care and health services to aging residents who have outlived their financial resources.  This is an excellent way to express gratitude for those who nurtured, cared and provided for us.

CHURCH RETREAT

We are making final decisions for our fall church retreat this week. If you would like to be part of the retreat committee this year, join us for a meeting tomorrow, May 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the Session Room. We need volunteers with skills in design/advertising, managing registrations, speaker planning, activities and worship. Contact Sarah Brownlee at rsbrownlee1046@att.net with any questions.

THEOLOGY ON TAP

Men of Morningside, mark your calendars for our final Theology on Tap of the season, this Tuesday, May 4 at 7 p.m. We will gather at  the home of Todd McDonald (835 Rowland Street, 30021). Topic: "The Pursuit of Happiness."  We'll discuss the virtue of contentment, and how we might achieve it in our own lives. The food will be good and the conversation is sure to be lively!  RSVP to Chris Henry today.

SMALL GROUP STUDY

The Bible Study Group on Galatians will meet this Wednesday, May 5 at 7 p.m. at the home of Greg and Carolyn Morton (2973 West Roxboro Road, 30324, 404.760.9984). All are invited.

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY

Women’s Bible Study led by Chris Henry is this Thursday, May 6 at 9:15 a.m. in Room 201. The group will study Acts 17:1-34. Childcare is provided.

YOUNG ADULTS BUILD FOR HABITAT-MAY 8

Join the Young Adults this Saturday, May 8 to help a deserving family obtain their own home. This is a great opportunity to meet or get to know fellow Morningsiders! Visit the Habitat bulletin board for information, and to sign up. Contact Lynsley Tyler lynsley@bellsouth.net for more information.

CALVIN COURT

Next Sunday, May 9, we begin our annual collection of goods for the Presbyterian Senior Community of Calvin Court. This year they are requesting items such as canned vegetables and meats, toiletries and paper products. Please see specific lists on the website or on MPC’s bulletin boards. Donation baskets will be in the Welcome Center through May 30.

MISSION COOKBOOKS

Support the outreach work of MPC with the purchase of a MPC cookbook for $10. The children have bought dishtowel “wrappings” with their offering and will sell them before and after worship through May 23. They make a great gift for Mothers’ Day, a new home or a hostess gift.

COMMUNITY FORUM AT TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Trinity Church is sponsoring a forum on the state budget, “More Taxes or Less Service-The State Budget Quandary” on Thursday, May 13 at 7 p.m. Guest speakers Dr. Dave Sjoquist, Director of the Fiscal Research Center at Georgia State University, and Alan Essig, Director of the Georgia Policy and Budget Institute, will lead the discussion. All are invited to attend this timely discussion.

BASEBALL AND THE VARSITY-MAY 15

Have you gotten your ticket yet? MPC will gather at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 15 for supper at the Varsity and to attend a Georgia Tech/University of Miami baseball game together.  Group tickets, $3 each.  For more information, contact Marshall Hunter or Richard Brownlee. Come join us and bring the whole family!

MENTAL HEALTH MONTH

Last year, we were honored to have First Lady Rosalyn Carter here for the Regional Council of Churches meeting.  Their focus that day and her passion is awareness and assistance for those facing mental illness.  This brain disorder that affects one in four families requires professional treatment, education and support to achieve recovery.  We answer God’s call when we show love, compassion and respect for those struggling with mental illness and their families.  The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is America’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness.  NAMI Georgia is your local resource and can be reached at www.namiga.org.  Please keep those facing mental illness and their caregivers in your prayers and help to share awareness of this serious challenge year round.

SUMMER AT MORNINGSIDE

All kids 4 years old through 5th grade are welcome to Vacation Bible School June 21-25, 8:45 a.m.-12 noon.  Join in the adventure as we travel ‘Around the World in 5 Days’ exploring mission at each destination. Hop on board as we set off to learn how to share God’s love with all our neighbors near and far. Cost is $25 which includes a t-shirt. The opportunities to help make this a special week for our kids range from donating snacks to leading a group on their travels, with lots of options in between. Join us for the first VBS workday on Wednesday, May 12 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

In July, children who have completed 2nd-6th grade are welcome to our second annual Mission Camp.  We will do outreach with children, seniors, the environment and those facing hunger Monday-Thursday, July 26-29, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.  On Friday, July 30, we will meet at 3 p.m. to head to Noah’s Ark Animal Rescue Center for an overnight stay returning Saturday.  All field trips including Noah’s Ark, snacks, lunches and a t-shirt are included in the $100 cost.  There will be volunteer opportunities, so come out and be part of our kids doing hands-on work to learn that ‘It’s Not All About Me!’  Registration and volunteer forms for both VBS and Mission Camp are available on the website and on the bulletin board across from the nursery (Rm 105). Contact Melinda Sandkam with questions.

LYDIA’S CIRCLE

Mark your calendars for the next Lydia’s Circle on Thursday, May 13 at 7 p.m. Contact Tara Parrish for information at taraparrish@bellsouth.net.
