MOTHER'S DAY OFFERING

This morning please consider joining with more than 200 Presbyterian congregations in Georgia to contribute to the Caring Hearts Fund.  This special offering benefits Presbyterian Homes, which provides exceptional care and health services to aging residents who have outlived their financial resources.  This is an excellent way to express gratitude for those who nurtured, cared and provided for us.  See the insert for more information.

CALVIN COURT

Today we begin our annual collection of goods for the Presbyterian Senior Community of Calvin Court. This year they are requesting items such as canned vegetables and meats, toiletries and paper products. Please see specific lists on the website or on the donation baskets display in the Welcome Center through May 30.

PICK-A-PAN SUNDAY

Take home an empty pan from the narthex today and return it by 10 a.m. this Tuesday, May 11 with the requested food to join us in providing lunch to 45 men attending the Common Ground program at Atlanta AIDS Faith & Health.

MISSION COOKBOOKS

Support the outreach work of MPC with the purchase of a MPC cookbook for $10. The children have bought dishtowel “wrappings” with their offering and will sell them before and after worship through May 23. They make a great gift for Mothers’ Day, a new home or a hostess gift.

COMMUNITY FORUM AT TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Trinity Church is sponsoring a forum on the state budget, “More Taxes or Less Service-The State Budget Quandary” this Thursday, May 13 at 7 p.m. Guest speakers Dr. Dave Sjoquist, Director of the Fiscal Research Center at Georgia State University, and Alan Essig, Director of the Georgia Policy and Budget Institute, will lead the discussion. All are invited to attend this timely discussion.

LYDIA’S CIRCLE

Lydia’s Circle will meet Thursday, May 13 at Loca Luna (550-C Amsterdam Avenue) from 7-9 p.m. We will enjoy a Cinco de Mayo party eight days late! RSVP to Tara Parrish taraparrish@bellsouth.net, so we can give the restaurant an accurate number.

HABITAT IN THE HOME STRETCH

We just have two more weeks to go with our Habitat for Humanity build! Please consider volunteering for one of the remaining build or lunch provider slots on May 15 or 22.  May 22 activities will include the ever popular landscaping task and a joyful home dedication for Kimberly Crane and her family.  Visit the Habitat bulletin board or see Lynsley Tyler (lynsley@bellsouth.net) for more details.

BASEBALL AND THE VARSITY-MAY 15

Have you gotten your ticket yet? MPC will gather at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 15 for supper at the Varsity and to attend a Georgia Tech/University of Miami baseball game together.  Group tickets, $3 each.  For more information, contact Marshall Hunter or Richard Brownlee. Come join us and bring the whole family!

MISSION TRIP SHOWCASE

The attendees for Spring Mission Trip to DC will share their experiences with different programs and also have information available about similar programs right here in Atlanta.  This showcase will take place during Fellowship Hour next Sunday, May 16 after worship.

ONE GRAY HAIR LUNCHEON

The next One Gray Hair Lunch and Program will be Wednesday, May 19 at noon in the Fellowship Hall. Bob Wells will share stories and images from his travels in China. Bob instructs with great competence and enthusiasm our Tai Chi practice groups at Morningside. RSVP to Sarah Brownlee at rsbrownlee1046@att.net.

CONGREGATIONAL LUNCH

Be sure to RSVP for lunch in Fellowship Hall on Pentecost Sunday, May 23 after worship.  Don’t miss an opportunity to meet our new Executive Presbyter Tom Evans while enjoying a delicious meal.  Suggested donation is $10 adults, $5 children.  Place your RSVP in the offering plate today or contact the church office this week. Volunteers are needed with setup, serving, and cleanup. If you can help, please contact Brad Odom at jbradleyodom@gmail.com.

MENTAL HEALTH MONTH

Last year, we were honored to have First Lady Rosalyn Carter here for the Regional Council of Churches meeting.  Their focus that day and her passion is awareness and assistance for those facing mental illness.  This brain disorder that affects one in four families requires professional treatment, education and support to achieve recovery.  We answer God’s call when we show love, compassion and respect for those struggling with mental illness and their families.  The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is America’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness.  NAMI Georgia is your local resource and can be reached at www.namiga.org.  Please keep those facing mental illness and their caregivers in your prayers and help to share awareness of this serious challenge year round.

SUMMER AT MORNINGSIDE

All kids 4 years old through 5th grade are welcome to Vacation Bible School June 21-25, 8:45 a.m.-12 noon.  Join in the adventure as we travel ‘Around the World in 5 Days’ exploring mission at each destination. Cost is $25 which includes a t-shirt. Join us for the first VBS workday on Wednesday, May 12 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

In July, children who have completed 2nd-6th grade are welcome to our second annual Mission Camp.  We will do outreach with children, seniors, the environment and those facing hunger Monday-Thursday, July 26-29, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.  On Friday, July 30, we will meet at 3 p.m. to head to Noah’s Ark Animal Rescue Center for an overnight stay. Cost is $100 if registered by June 6.

Registration and volunteer forms for both VBS and Mission Camp are available on the website and on the bulletin board across from the nursery (Rm 105). Contact Melinda Sandkam with questions including scholarship information.
