* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings
good news, who announces salvation.
People: Break forth together into singing, for the Lord has comforted his
people.
Leader: Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the Lord
been revealed?

see the salvation of our God.
Leader: Let us worship God together! -from Isaiah 52

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 138 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Generous God, you send us the Spirit of courage, but we have been afraid. You
send us the Spirit of truth, but we cling to our illusions. You send us the Spirit of
healing, but we cannot let go of our hurts. Holy Spirit of forgiveness, come to us
again: shake our hearts, shake our minds. Send us out into the world rejoicing in
your power. Give us courage to live the way of your justice and love. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 579)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the
beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three-year-olds are in
Room 208; Pre-K in 011; K - 2nd grade in 001; 3rd - 6th grade in 005.)

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE FIRST LESSON Deuteronomy 6:1-9 (page 157 in the pew Bible)

THE ANTHEM Shall We Gather at the River? arr. Carter
Melissa Kelly, guest soloist
Shall we gather at the river where bright angel feet have trod; with its crystal tide forever flowing by
the throne of God? Yes, we'll gather at the river, the beautiful river, gather with the saints at the river
that flows by the throne of God. Ere we reach the shining river, lay we every burden down; grace our
spirits will deliver and provide a robe and crown. Deep river, my home is over Jordan. Deep river, I want to
cross over into campground. Soon we'll reach the shining river, soon our pilgrimage will cease; soon our
happy hearts will quiver with the melody of peace.

THE SECOND LESSON Romans 10:14-17 (page 150 in the pew Bible)

THE SERMON "Does Theology Matter?" Christopher Henry
But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed?
And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? Romans 10:14a

* THE HYMN 361 How Firm a Foundation (verses 1 through 5)

* THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy
Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from
the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the
Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of
saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us
our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY O Rest in the Lord (from Elijah) Mendelssohn
Melissa Kelly, alto
O rest in the Lord, wait patiently for Him, and He shall give thee thy heart's desires. Commit thy
way unto Him, and trust in Him, and fret not thyself because of evil doers. O rest in the Lord.

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 139 Come, Thou Almighty King

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE The King of Love My Shepherd Is Ancient Irish
And so through all the length of days Thy goodness faileth never; Good Shepherd, may I
