WELCOME BISHOP WILLIAM H. WILLIMON
This morning, we welcome as our distinguished guest preacher the Reverend Dr. William H. Willimon, Bishop of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church. Willimon was for twenty years Dean of the Chapel and Professor of Christian Ministry at Duke University. He is the author of sixty books and has preached and lectured to Christian communities all over the world. We are so fortunate and grateful to welcome him to Morningside Presbyterian Church. Bishop Willimon will remain after worship for a Sunday Forum in the Fellowship Hall. Childcare is provided in Room 105.
WELCOMING OUR NEIGHBORS
The Evangelism Ministry Team is seeking volunteers to participate in a new program aimed at reaching out to our visitors and regular attendees who are prospective members of MPC. An organizational meeting is planned for this Sunday, June 13 at 5:30 p.m. at Doug Self’s home (2575 Peachtree Rd. NE 23C). Please contact Doug Self at doug@jdouglasliving.com if you are interested in hearing more about this outreach opportunity.
NEEDED - INFANT NURSERY VOLUNTEERS
Along with two paid nursery workers, volunteers typically work in the nursery one Sunday every two to three months during the worship service. It is a lot of fun, and we could really use your help! Contact Heather Regnault (hpregnault@yahoo.com or 404.771.0716) for more information or to volunteer.
SUMMER DISCUSSION GROUP ON SPIRITUALITY
Beginning tomorrow, June 14 at 7 p.m. at Morningside Presbyterian Church, Katie Davis will lead a small group on Christian Spirituality that will meet every other week this summer. The group will base its discussion on a book by Joan Chittister, a renowned leader on spiritual formation. Copies of the book will be available at the church. Call the church office (404.876.7396) for more information or to reserve a place.
AROUND THE WORLD IN 5 DAYS
Vacation Bible School is June 21-25, 8:45 a.m.-12 noon for children 4 years old through 5th grade. Registration form on MPC website. See the donation board across from Room 103 with items that are needed for the week. We are also seeking luggage to borrow as props. Luggage can be dropped off in Room 003. Contact Melinda Sandkam if you would be able to lead a one day activity on Wednesday or assist with a four year old class Tuesday and Thursday. Join us for VBS workday this Wednesday, June 16 at 9:30 a.m.
NEWS FROM FINANCE COMMITTEE
Through the end of April, Morningside's total receipts of $211,324 were running below expenses of $232,492. Fortunately, a portion of this deficit is offset by surplus funds from last year's budget. Please remember your pledge this summer and, whether you have pledged or not, prayerfully consider what you can give. Your officers and staff are managing very carefully with reduced receipts this year – sensitive to the economic stress everyone is facing. As always, we rejoice in the joyful generosity of the Morningside community and the commitments to ministry and mission it enables us to fulfill.
CHURCH RETREAT TO MONTREAT
The dates have been set for our second annual fall retreat to Montreat, North Carolina. Mark your calendars now for the November 19-21 return to the wonderful William Black Lodge. We are pleased to announce that Rev. Dr. Tom Evans, Executive Presbyter of Greater Atlanta, will be our retreat leader. Details and registration forms are now available. Registration deposit is due July 18.
UPCOMING MISSION TRIPS
As Presbyterian Disaster Assistance begins its flood recovery work in Nashville, Morningside is in conversation with them regarding a date to help with these efforts. Watch for more details. MPC has also made plans to go to Haiti October 9-15 to work with St. Joseph’s Home for Boys. Contact Duncan Spears if you are interested in the PDA trip to Tennessee and Brad Odom regarding information on Haiti trip. There will be a lunch meeting following worship on Sunday, June 27 for those going to Haiti, and a commitment will be needed by July 1.
WELCOME BASKETS
Each man who moves out of Clifton Sanctuary Ministries into his own home is given a Welcome Basket filled with essential household items for his pantry. Help us provide these housewarming gifts by providing requested items in the month of June. See display in Welcome Center and the website for items needed and return them by the Fourth of July!
‘IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT ME’ II
Mission Camp returns July 26-31 for completed 2nd-6th graders. Be sure to register as soon as possible. Contact Melinda Sandkam for scholarship information. We need chaperones Monday-Thursday. Do you have one day to give to this great endeavor? And, we are seeking large tents to borrow for Friday night sleepover at Noah’s Ark Animal Rescue Center.
PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (U.S.A.): 219th GENERAL ASSEMBLY
From July 3 to 10, the 219th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) will be meeting in Minneapolis.
