THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious and merciful God, you have created us in your image. Yet, too quickly
we deny your life-giving ways. You teach us to forgive as we have been forgiven.
Yet, we cling to our anger and disappointments; we hold on to our hurts and frustrations.
You embrace us with your love. Yet, we hoard this gift, hesitant to embrace
our neighbor and share the love you so freely give. By your steadfast love and
mercy, release us from our sinfulness. Return to us the joy of your salvation. Hear,
O Lord, our prayer for your forgiveness. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 280)
The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE FIRST LESSON Psalm 5:1-8 (page 464 in the pew Bible)

THE ANTHEM The Apple Tree Scottish folk song, arr. Scott
The tree of life my soul hath seen, laden with fruit and always green, the trees of nature fruitless be
compared with Christ, the apple tree. His beauty doth all things excel, by faith I know but ne'er can tell
the glory which I now can see in Jesus Christ, the apple tree. For happiness I long have sought, and pleasure
dearly I have bought. I missed of all but now I see ‘tis found in Christ. I'm weary with my former
toil. Here I will sit and rest awhile, under the shadow I will be, of Jesus Christ. This fruit doth make my
soul to thrive. It keeps my dying faith alive, which makes my soul in haste to be with Jesus Christ, the
apple tree.

THE SECOND LESSON Luke 7:36-8:3 (page 62 in the pew Bible)

THE SERMON "Do You See?" Bishop William H. Willimon

* THE HYMN 366 Jesus, Thy Boundless Love to Me

* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (from A Brief Statement of Faith)
In life and in death we belong to God.
Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit,
we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel,
whom alone we worship and serve.
We trust in Jesus Christ,
Fully human, fully God.
Jesus proclaimed the reign of God:
preaching good news to the poor
and release to the captives,
teaching by word and deed
and blessing the children,
healing the sick
and binding up the brokenhearted,
eating with outcasts,
forgiving sinners,
and calling all to repent and believe the gospel.
With believers in every time and place,
we rejoice that nothing in life or in death
can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us
our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Blessed Art Thou, O Lord of Our Fathers Martin Shaw
Blessed art Thou, O Lord of our fathers, praised and exalted above all forever. Blessed art Thou for the
name of Thy majesty. Blessed art Thou in the temple of Thy holiness. Blessed art Thou that beholdest the
depths, and dwellest between the Cherubim. Blessed art Thou on the glorious throne of Thy kingdom.
Blessed art Thou in the firmament of heaven. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy
Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)

* THE HYMN 332 Live Into Hope

* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

* THE CHORAL RESPONSE God Be In My Head John Rutter
God be in my head and in my understanding. God be in mine eyes and in my looking.
God be in my mouth and in my speaking. God be in mine heart and in my thinking. God be
at my end and in my departing. - text from the Sarum Primer
