WORSHIP JUNE 27, 2010
13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
THE GATHERING
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
THE PRELUDE Walter Huff, organist
* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Your way, O God, is holy. What god is so great as our God?
People: We will call to mind the deeds of the Lord.
Leader: You are the God who works wonders; with your strong arm you redeemed
your people.
People: We will call to mind the deeds of the Lord.
Leader: Let us gather to worship and remember the wonders of the most High God.
- from Psalm 77
* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 285 God, You Spin the Whirling Planets
THE CALL TO CONFESSION
THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Come, Lord God, to make us whole in the slow tread of seasons and in the
quickstep of days. We have let the sound of angels singing be muffled by engines
grinding and our self pity. We have permitted the breeze of seraphim
wings to be stifled by pavement heat rising. We have allowed our vision of
Christ to be restrained by tedious acts of living. Give us, Lord God, senses born
of risky belief that these hot days be filled with dancing and singing of your
glory, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 139)
To Thee, great One in Three, the highest praises be, hence evermore! Thy sovereign
majesty may we in glory see, and to eternity love and adore.
* THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 2-11 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Three-year-olds are in
Room 208; Pre-K in 011; K - 2nd grade in 001; 3rd - 6th grade in 005.)
THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)
THE MINUTE MESSAGE Martin Dunlap
THE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 46:3-10 Daisy Ottmann
(page 635 in the pew Bible)
THE ANTHEM O Come, Ye Servants of the Lord Christopher Tye
O come, ye servants of the Lord, and praise His holy name. From early morn to setting sun,
His might on earth proclaim. His laws are just, and glad the heart; He makes His mercies
known; ye princes come, ye people too, and bow before His throne.
THE SECOND LESSON Psalm 77:1-3, 11-20 (page 508 in the pew Bible)
THE SERMON "Remember When..." Christopher Henry
I will call to mind the deeds of the Lord. I will remember your wonders of old. Psalm 77:11
* THE HYMN 234 I to the Hills Will Lift My Eyes
* THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from An Affirmation of Faith, The Presbyterian Church of New Zealand
Christ Jesus,
Child of Mary, God with us,
King and Suffering Servant,
High Priest and Lamb of God,
Teacher and Word,
living, suffering, dying and rising again,
you challenge, redeem and restore us.
Holy Spirit,
Breath of life,
Counsellor and Comforter,
Fire of God,
you inspire, sustain, and purify us.
Forming us in the nature of Christ,
transforming us with your gifts,
you bind us together in one body, your church.
God of all creation,
made known to us in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit,
your boundless love exposes our rebellion and greed.
A mother who will not abandon her child,
a father who welcomes the prodigal home,
you forgive, accept and embrace us
and call us into loving communion for ever.
In life and death we belong to you,
everlasting God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us
our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY Day by Day Ahnfelt, arr. Porter
* THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 592)
* THE HYMN 277 O God, Our Faithful God
* THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION
* THE CHORAL RESPONSE Gloria Patri (Glory be to the Father) Martin Shaw
