FLOWERS IN THE SANCTUARY

The flowers in the sanctuary are given by Kathy and Alan Bremer in loving memory of Kathy’s father, Gordon Day, who died  July 7, 2010.

WELCOME-CHANCEL CHOIR GUESTS

Today is Morningside’s first “Sing with the Choir” Sunday-an opportunity for eight members of the congregation to join the choir during worship. These volunteers rehearsed with the choir this past Wednesday and participated in this morning’s vocal warm-up. Congratulations to Faye McKay Clegg, Gail Kitchens, Sarah Tomaka, Daniel Easton, Dale Gustafson, Guerry Mashburn, Jeff Peters, and David York.

THIS MORNING'S AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

For this morning's Affirmation of Faith, we use a creed from the Iona Abbey Community in Scotland. This ecumenical Christian community was founded in 1938 by Rev. George MacLeod, a minister in the Church of Scotland. Iona, with its emphasis on worship and prayer, has become a place of retreat and reflection for Christians around the world.

CHURCH RETREAT TO MONTREAT-NOVEMBER 19-21

Registration for MPC's 2nd Annual Retreat to Montreat is well underway! If you have been thinking about going but have not yet completed your registration, now is the time. We need to know how many are attending as early as possible to plan programming, space, and food. (Of course reservations will be accepted as long as we have space, but don't risk being left out!) Last year 53 members of all ages enjoyed this special time away from the city to fellowship with each other, reflect and give thanks for God's goodness in 2009. We hope you will join us in 2010. Questions? Contact Sarah Brownlee, rsbrownlee1046@att.net.

CLIFTON SANCTUARY MINISTRIES

On Saturday, July 24th, MPC will serve a Pork Chop Dinner for the 30 homeless men at Clifton Sanctuary Ministries beginning at 5:30 p.m. If you would like to help serve or can prepare one of the dinner items, please sign up at the bulletin board outside the session room. You may also contact Tony Fishpaw at 404.597.5485 or tonyfishpaw@me.com.

CONGREGATIONAL HYMN SING NEXT SUNDAY

As part of worship next Sunday, we will have an old-fashioned congregational hymn sing. The service will be inspiring and filled with wonderful music--come to sing some of your favorites with your congregation!

NASHVILLE MISSION TRIP

As Presbyterian Disaster Assistance begins its flood recovery work in Nashville, Morningside will send a team August 18-21. Contact Duncan Spears if you are interested in this mission trip to Tennessee and plan on attending an informational meeting next Sunday, July 25, at 12:15 p.m.

‘IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT ME’ II

Mission Camp returns July 26-31 with 21 children registered! Do you have one day to give to this great endeavor? We still need a chaperone/driver Tuesday and Thursday, and we are seeking three more large tents to borrow for the Friday night sleepover at Noah’s Ark Animal Rescue Center. Contact Melinda Sandkam to help out.

For that week, we are also in need of healthy snacks, lunches, and beverages, and we are looking for volunteers to assist in providing these nutritional needs as our children participate in several missions in our community to explore the concept of "It’s not all about me."  Please contact Shannon Lazzaro if you are able to participate at Lazzaroshannon@yahoo.com or sign up on the bulletin board across from the Session Room (Rm 103). Still needed are: Monday’s lunch and snack; Tuesday’s lunch; Thursday’s lunch; and Friday’s snack.

INTOWN COLLABORATIVE MINISTRIES

The Intown Collaborative Ministries (formerly ICA) is a ministry cooperative of congregations in zip codes 30306 and 30307 intended to help alleviate hunger by providing nutritious food and social growth through meaningful service. We will be collecting food donations through August 1.  The current needs include: canned vegetables and fruits, pasta sauce, peanut butter, canned meats, fruit juices, cold cereals and crackers. Please support this important outreach by placing donated items in the Welcome Center baskets.

WHAT HAPPENED AT GENERAL ASSEMBLY?

On Sunday, August 1, at 9:45a.m. in Room 201, Chris Henry will offer a summary of the actions and conversations of the 219th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), followed by time for dialogue and questions. Come to learn more about the mission and ministry of our denomination and its work around the world!

HUFF ANNIVERSARY
Plans are being finalized for a weekend celebration of Walter Huff's 20 years as Music Director at Morningside.  In early September, Morningside members and friends will receive invitations to a dinner to be held at Druid Hills Golf Club on Saturday, October 16. An enclosed RSVP card will need to be returned no later than Friday, October 1st. Cost is anticipated to be $50/per person.
Additionally, Walter's ministry will also be recognized during worship on October 17 and at a reception during the Fellowship Hour following worship.
Save these dates and join fellow Morningsiders as we recognize Walter's significant contributions to our worship experience and to the ministry of Morningside Presbyterian Church since 1990.

OPENINGS AT MORNINGSIDE PRESCHOOL

Morningside Presbyterian Preschool currently has openings in the pre-k class for this fall. The child must be four years old by September 1, 2010. For more information, please contact Sarah Tomaka at 404/685-8758 or mpp@morningsidepc.org.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT MORNINGSIDE

The Bible Class - A Journey Through the Word

Next Sunday, July 25, Morningside's Bible Class will complete its series entitled, "A Journey Through the Word." Mary Miller Brueggemann and Jim Martin will lead the class in reflecting on the New Testament as a whole, and sharing discoveries and questions. The Morningside Bible Class meets each Sunday at 9:45am in Room 201.

Children’s Classes

The Preschool children hear about the time when God chose Moses to lead God’s people in a story about the “Burning Bush.” K-2 will study the Four Friends story in the Gospel of Mark. 3rd-6th grades will take a look at the creeds of our faith.
