Burning Questions for 21st Century Christians

Sermon II: "Who Will Be Saved? A Theology of World Religions"

Texts: Isaiah 56:6-8; John 3:1-17

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

Haden and Finley Holaway, children of Shawn and Mary Hardy Holaway, will be baptized this morning. Thanks be to God!

FALL SERMON SERIES

This morning, Chris Henry continues a five-week sermon series on Burning Questions for 21st Century Christians. Each week's sermon will consider one of the most pressing questions that Christians face as we seek to live out our faith in the contemporary world. Next week, we continue with the question, "Whose Side is God on? A Theology on Politics." May we all grow deeper in faith this fall as together we struggle to understand how God speaks in our time and place.

TODAY’S OFFERTORY MUSIC

During the offertory in today’s worship, the Chancel Choir will present the 3rd Movement of the Chichester Psalms by the renowned American composer, Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990). Considered one of the most important musicians of our time, Bernstein was also known as a conductor, author, music lecturer, and pianist. He composed for virtually every medium, including well-known works for the stage-such as West Side Story, Candide, and Mass. The Chichester Psalms were composed in 1965, for the Cathedral of Chichester (Sussex, England) annual music festival.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF CHILDREN AGE THREE AND UP

Please come to one of our Sunday School Volunteer fellowship and training sessions Sun., Aug. 22, 12:30 - 2 p.m. or Wed. Aug. 25, 6 - 7:30 p.m. We appreciate your help in your child's class and want to make that time the best it can be. There will be time for fellowship, a light meal, and a short discussion on how to get the most out of your experience and what to expect when you assist in the classroom. RSPV to Jill Davis jsamail@yahoo.com or 404.687.0617.

CONTINUING THE CONVERSATION

After worship next Sunday, August 29, we will have a chance to share further thoughts on the sermon topic in the Fellowship Hall. Questions and comments from you, the congregation, will be the focus.  A light lunch will be available prior to the conversation.

Faith and Issues Class - Technology and Us...or...Do You Give A Tweet?

Next Sunday August 29, the Faith and Issues Class, which meets in the Session Room, will discuss the role of technology in our lives. How do we strike a balance? What about our children? How has technology changed the way we use our brains?  Amy DeBaets, Morningside member and Emory graduate student in ethics, will lead the class.
